Another AR Build

Hi Guys

Finished another AR build a few minutes ago, here are a couple of photo's. Decided to give this one some color to remind me of the sandbox days.

Strange in the photos the furniture looks like it is different colors, but it all matches in real life. MagPul Dark Earth to be exact, dont know why the flash is screwing with it.

Todd :)

nice AR... is this your first build or what... iraq has changed so much since i was last here in 05 and 06... to many rules.. how do you like your stock??

K9Torro 09-26-2009 01:36 PM

No I have built quite a few of them, have built both 5.56 and 9 mm. I think I will do a 7.62x39 gun next time.

Yeah I am glad we are pulling back from there finally, the stock is pretty nice I think MagPul does a good job with their stuff.

Todd :)

MotoSook 09-26-2009 02:51 PM

Looks good. Did you get the Spikes lower for $89.99?

Rick Lee 09-26-2009 04:28 PM

I have that same Spike's lower, but am still waiting for my Del-Ton kit to arrive.

Racerbvd 09-26-2009 04:48 PM

I need to build one of these!!!!

porsche4life 09-26-2009 04:50 PM

Mind giving us an approximate cost? I have thought about building one or buying one but IDK...

MotoSook 09-26-2009 06:39 PM

FYI. you can pick up a complete Del-Ton from AIM for less than $700. That's about what it would cost to build a low end AR. DS Arms has complete uppers for $265. Spikes has complete lowers for $250. Add a BCG for $120 and a charging handle for $20. Magpul sights for $90. Magpul magazines are $13 each and you are in business.

Seems like now is the time to build one to get exactly the rifle you want. Lowers and uppers are plenty and the retailers are trying to get rid of the overstocked now that the rush is over.

Lots of deals on complete uppers out there too.

K9Torro 09-26-2009 06:48 PM

Lower came from Spikes $89.00 plus shipping came out to $113.00 all told, the kit came from J&T for $499.00 plus ship, This was the heavy barrel chrome lined with A2 upper, so you can build a base line gun for under $550.00 if you wanted to.

I added some cost with the MagPul stock, pistol grip and the YM Free Float forearm and covers, but I have the left over parts from the kit that I could sell to recoup some of the money I guess.

I think the prices are going to come back down on them now that all the hoop la is over with.

Todd :)

Dueller 09-26-2009 06:54 PM

not to hijack, Todd, but did you work on that mass murder on St Simons/Jekyll/Brunswick a few months baack? What was the scoop?

K9Torro 09-26-2009 07:13 PM

Hi Jim

Nope did not work any on that one, the case you are interested in was a Glynn County case which is just North of me, they actually had several homicide cases in a row including the big one, last big one we had was a triple homicide Xmas week last year,

Todd :)

Uh oh. Looks like I need to find some money.

I didn't notice the paint, but it looks tiny.

porsche4life 09-26-2009 11:50 PM

But its sooo lethal.

My camera is not the best, I have it set to low quality to keep the file size down.
The paint is actually pretty well done and the markings are standard size they are a HK inspired system.

Todd :)

K9Torro 09-27-2009 02:38 AM

Jim

Dont know the Sammy guy if he works in Glynn I only know a few of the people up there.

Todd :)

I'm just putting the finishing touches on my AR now. I'll post pix of it by next weekend.

Yours looks great K9. :)

abisel 09-27-2009 10:54 AM

K9Torro,

I do like to see AR's that are unique and not pimped out. Yours looks very fine indeed! I like the color contrast. Maybe I'll do something similiar to my RRA M4.

BTW, thanks for your service at the sandbox.

If I may, I too am building a new AR.

I have been shooting service rifle class in NRA High Power competition for several years and have achieved Master classification. Now, I have decided to build an AR space gun for the match rifle class.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1254076977.jpg
Basis is a Les Baer Custom with a Jewell two-stage trigger. The barrel is a Krieger 26", 1:7.7 twist with fluting under the handguard. Pistol grip and front sight base is from David Tubb Superior Shooting Systems. Handguard is from White Oak Armament. Front sight insert and the rear sight are Centra. Sight radius is 30.5".

I am waiting on a new rear iris to replace that supplied with the rear sight. Also looking to get an adjustable buttplate that provides length of pull, vertical and cant adjustments.

That thing is just sweet beyond words.

K9Torro 09-27-2009 12:19 PM

Your camera is alot better than mine ever will be, I shoot NRA service rifle matches too but still us a NM M1 if you can believe it.

Todd

slodave 09-27-2009 12:21 PM

Todd, I don't think it is your camera. The first pic has a bit of an optical illusion and for some reason, it looks miniature. :)

Nice job on the paint.

K9Torro 09-27-2009 12:33 PM

Here is another one I did for distance work,

Hi Dave

You know it does look funny sitting up against the kitchen backsplash like that, strange. I will do a group shot. On the paint Spikes did the work for me, I usually do my own, like on the Oly long gun pictured. When I do it I use the paint sticks from Brownells they are very easy to use and come in several colors, if you have any engraving they will really bring it out.

Todd :)

K9Torro 09-27-2009 12:43 PM

Ok here is another photo, still cant figure out this camera. It is my work camera and is an Olympus but I have not studied the manual that came with it to see how it works, they pay alot for them it is probably operator error.

Todd :)

PS... I put a bottle of Woodchuck and a 20 round mag in the pic for scale...lol

abisel 09-27-2009 12:44 PM

If you decide to sell your NM M1, let me know. I have a service grade M1 I got from the DCM years ago. $250 and it has a 6-digit serial number which puts it to be built in '42. I suspect it saw pacific action. Wonder if there is any way to find out who the rifle was issued to.

My camera isn't anything special. It is an older Nikon D70 ditital SLR with and even older Nikon 24-120mm lens.

Cheers

K9Torro 09-27-2009 12:50 PM

Hi Ab,

I started with it in the early 80's so I better hang on to it, and it is a Navy gun (7.62 NATO) on top of that, they are rare these days. There were still some ole timers us 03's back in them days but mostly M1's and 14's. We have shot some really good matches together and some really bad ones, when I started out I had better eyes than I do now. It is all in the X count.

Did you notice the trigger on the AR ?

Todd :)

K9Torro 09-27-2009 12:52 PM

I am pulling the stock on my Gnat Killer AR, the one that is on it is a A2 style that has been lead filled, but I am heading back to MagPul for school and plan on picking up a PRS stock from them to put on there. They usually load us (students) up with free stuff when we go I am gonna hit them up for a PRS instead of the usual handouts if that dont work I will just buy one they give us a discount when we are there.

Todd :)

abisel 09-27-2009 12:57 PM

This is a pic I took of my shooting gear spread out on the kitchen floor for a friend thinking of high power competition and he wanted to see what I use during competition. The rifle is an early Colt "slab side" with Krieger 1:7.7 barrel, free-float handguard, 1/4 minute rear sight, and Malaazo 2-stage trigger. A tack driver for sure.

Ab

I have the same mat, similar stand / scope and glove. My heavy jacket is black/white leather (old school I know) and I still have an old issued OD green light weight one too. Have not shot a match in years, just too busy at work/life these days.

Todd :)

abisel 09-27-2009 01:06 PM

...and now for something completely different.

I wish the cat did flush.

I have a PRS on my RRA M4 that I may give up. Though of trying it on the space gun, but it doesn't have a vertical or cant adjustment to the pad. So I may sell it and get a collapsible M4 style buttstock.

K9Torro 09-27-2009 02:24 PM

Ab

I have a standard M4 stock and some other stuff if you want to work some kind of trade, I can always get something else when I am at MagPul, is your PRS black , with the height and pull adjustments ?

Todd

If you are going to build one, here is a good starting point. Aero makes lowers for a lot of vendors, including Spikes. That one in the OP came from Aero. $125 for a lower receiver and DPMS lower parts kit is a good deal. I'm tempted to get one just for the hell of it and build it in case there's another rush.
