What would you buy for < $5k?

Let's say you have a $5k budget for another automotive purchase. You have $1k to spend in the next year on upgrades and maintenance. This will be a weekend or whenever toy.

Go.

porsche4life 09-26-2009 03:42 PM

Hmm what are you going to do with said toy? A trick Miata would be a good choice. That or a early VW GTI.

Dantilla 09-26-2009 04:09 PM

Miata or 944.

I'd buy a convertible. 5.0 mustang. 1995 with a stickshift.

01 GT Mustang with a new V8 fior $4,000 obo

GT Mustang for sell at great deal

Schumi 09-26-2009 07:38 PM

A good condition 951 in need of some DIY wrenching- maybe one with a bad clutch that is otherwise nice.. can be had for 5K$.

Or a 914 already set up like this one

As far as non-Porsches go... I always thought it'd be cool to have a olive drab YJ jeep, no doors, just to bomb around in.

HardDrive 09-26-2009 08:14 PM

Ummmm...me thinks that might be a BIT beyond the budget....

Yeah, I was going to say, "Someone please show me where I can get THAT for <$5k!!!" Looks more like $15-20k to me (or $10k if you start to see the problems when you get up close).

Yeah, miata. It was the only car that I could see trying to replace the 911 with. It's definitely not a 911, but it offers a very similar/nice driving experience. Rear wheel drive, adjustable double-wishbone suspension front and rear, coilover shocks (not struts), light weight, tossable, steers great with the throttle (surprising TTO). I did a couple of upgrades to mine, and it'll take a corner as fast as my 911 could (maybe a bit faster). Parts (upgrade and/or maintenance) are much cheaper than a Porsche of any sort. Huge aftermarket for it (what do you want to do). You can turn it into a "locost 7", you can put a V-8 in it (chevy or ford), you can add a turbo or supercharger, you can go balls-out nuts on the suspension, spec-miata, whatever.

masraum 09-26-2009 08:24 PM

One other thought, a bug would be a fun toy. You could go for a powerful motor that would embarrass a lot of other cars out there in a straight line, you could go the baja route, or just a classic Cali look. Again, similar to the miata in that anything that you can imagine, you can do, and it's cheap.

Noah930 09-26-2009 09:14 PM

Didn't a Pelican have a clean one of those early Landcruisers for sale for about $4K? Either that, or a Miata. Would depend on needs/desires.

dentist90 09-26-2009 10:26 PM

If you like road-hugging, turbo-lagging but modifiable exhuberance I'd go for a Mitsubishi Eclipse or Eagle Talon (Full disclosure: see sig line below)
Full leather, A/C, power everything, Chrysler serviceable and supreme confidence in wet or snow. The only downside? Not a Porsche. (Under $5K? Not sure)

Wow I had no idea you were a Ricer at heart? Seriously around here all of those have fart cans on them...

dd74 09-26-2009 10:40 PM

Miata. And $1K will get you a helluva a suspension. You can't go wrong.

Mine's bone stock. But man I would love to slam it!! Unfortunately I have to drive it thru 12" dumps of snow with the kids, so it stays at rally height. I would do suspension mods long before I played with making the exhaust noisy. I too have no use for non-productive mods.

I'm not a ricer, but i do have a weakness for >100hp/L output. I love to hear these sewing machines work. Life comes alive in the corners.

Mk 1 GTI or Rabbit convertible
Miata
Saab 900 convertible
