Would you buy something that "fell off the truck"
I sometimes get firewood from this guy who lives near my shop, and he told me the other day , that he also sells heating oil. He gets $1.50 per gallon. I think it is around $3.00 right now. I didn't ask, and he didn't offer, but I am assuming he is not getting this legitimately .

Don't know about wood or heating oil but NO... I wouldn't knowingly buy anything stolen.
I don't believe in karma but I don't support thieves.

NO. I've had too much stuff stolen from me. Just recently, some peckerhead stole the winter wheels & tires for my Benz. I've been watching for them in pawnshops and online classifieds, just so I can find who pinched them then burn their house down and kill their dog. I hate theives.
Ask for a receipt. If he can't give one, tell him to pound sand. And then stop buying firewood from him.

Like, if you see a set of wheels set outside a garage door... why not just grab them? someone else is going to steal them anyway, right?

Is it possible his "heating oil" is mixed with something cheaper? I don't know much about heating oil, we don't have that 'round these parts.

Simple enough answer NO, just thinking that someone else will buy it is not good enough of an excuse. If their was no market then nobody would be stealing from honest folks. I have lost way too much over the years to these theiving B$&&&'s

I left it at the beach down the road. Someone must have seen and and thought "well someone else is going to steal it anyway..."

I bought some warm Fosters and a tray of cookies from a guy at a frisbee golf course once. I'm pretty sure he wahoo'd them from a grocery store, but hey, I was thirsty and had the munchies. Other than that one time, no.

I know the firewood is not stolen, they have a bunch of wooded property, and he has his boys cut/split and deliver, but I am not sure about the heating oil. It is somewhat tempting. It would save me $375.00 Every time I fill up. Maybe I should outright ask him how he can sell it so cheap. Maybe it is not stolen, but the guy seems a little shady.

Ask him. If nothing else, you'll get a good BS story to post here. Nothing to lose...

I don't doubt the firewood is legit, I just think that if someone is dealing in something shady like stolen oil, then they aren't worth having around at all. Anything in your shop that someone like m21sniper might be interested in buying, if they got a real good deal on it? Side note: It really could be 100% legit. I met a guy who'd advertise to pick up old oil tanks and collect the leftover oil. Most tanks he picked up were at least 1/4 full. He'd filter it and sell it. No harm, no foul.

Several years ago I went to Panama City Beach, Florida and headed out to a park there where the beach was more deserted.
I was wearing an almost new pair of Reeboks and a new pair of short socks. When I walked to the end of the seemingly-10-mile long wooden walkway to the beach I removed said shoes and socks and hid them at the base of the stairs. When I returned from my couple hours on the beach some low-life had stolen my shoes and socks! It was apparent they hadn't washed up on shore and they were so clean and new looking they surely couldn't have looked abandonded to any reasonable person. But who says thieves are reasonable, right. For this person's thievery I had to walk on that blistering hot boardwalk back to the parking lot whereupon the hike continued across scorching asphalt until reaching the car. I had blisters on my feet that ensured the next couple of days were a delight whenever I tried to walk. I hope that bum enjoyed my dammm shoes! This experience pretty much put an end to me buying "liberated" goods from roving retailers. |

Heating oil is pretty much diesel with a red dye added...the dye to prevent road use tax avoidance.
