Honda S2000 drivetrain would be nice, saw that in a Datsun 510 once and it worked pretty well

Thanks for all the great engine ideas. One of those get it moving with the engine it has and then plan for more power projects.

Really though, once the novelty wears off I think a big brute of an engine in a bugeye wouldn't be all that much fun. Something smaller & high-revving would appeal more to me. Wans't there a company putting Suzuki 1.3 twin cam 16v engines in sprites, with a 5speed? Something like that would be a hoot.

I very strongly agree.

I also think a lot of these suggestions may be interesting, but the end result would be a car that is slower and poorer handling than the donor car. And one that can't even keep up with a tweaked ricer econobox.

Unless you also redo the suspension, the brakes, the frame, well - re-engineer the entire car.

A turbo Audi motor? a Jag 3.8? Hmmm... price of engine versus price/value of car.

And how much work do you really want? For example, the original SHO motor was a sidewinder front-wheel drive. That would take a LOT of engineering to rework for your application.

A-H Sprites & MG Midgets are what they are. They will never be a modern performance car, or even close. Enjoy it for what it is.

Btw, I've done some engine swaps, and I'm an ex-Brit car guy (TR3A, TR6, TR8).

That Datsun engine you have is a great fit for the Bugeye. I also had a '59 and sold it just a few years back. Unless you are willing to change out the suspension, brakes, rear end, etc., a bigger engine is just too much for that car. Once you change all of those items out you no longer really have a Bugeye, you have a kit car.

I think the jag six is a boat anchor but the cam/valve covers look good polished

I've been intrigued with the idea of a Toyota 4AGE into a Spitfire and a 5spd trans with it. It's modeled after the Ford Cosworth Racing engines of yesteryear, is lighter than the original motors and powerful (puts out more than my 6cyl gt6) and with modern fuel injection in the light car will get 40+ mpg and not ruin the handling of the car. Maybe you have the same already with the Datsun motor I don't know.

here's a link to something similar

Larry Breitkreitz's 1973 Spitfire, with Toyota 4AGE 4-cylinder

You may have seen this already, Late model midget with that motor.
