Scary but Funny Injury at Sons Football Practice

At practice the other night, our Son was playing QB. Normally that is not his post but the coach was having the boys switch posts each play to get a feel and understanding of the importance of each.

He took the snap faded back 3 to 4 steps and was just about to screen to his TE when he was popped from behind. The MKB blitz from the blind side and drilled his helmet into the small of our Son’s back. It was a hard hit but not a smart one. Spearing is a real bad idea and can do a serious number on your neck.

Our Son is good size and pretty darn tough but he went down like a sack of lard and was motionless. The kids saw this and instinctually took a knee and stayed motionless. The coaches and myself ran to him. He was crying which he never ever does. I have witness him open up a knee or catch a ball in the face and not shed a tear. The coaches know this as well so for him to be crying suggested it was heck of a pop and something was wrong. The coached asked the customary questions:

“Max, do you know where you are?”

“On the ground coach.”

They look over at me “Well, he is on the ground.”

“Max, what day is it?”

“Ugh…hmmm…”

“Coach, he doesn’t know what it is ever is unless its Friday.” I said.

“It’s true coach, I don’t really care what day it is unless it’s Friday.”

“OK Max, I’m gonna ask you if you can feel this then.” And the coach scrapped his right shin with his finger. “What leg am I touching Max?”

“Ugh…hmmm….”

“Coach, he has dyslexia remember.” I say.

The coaches look at me as if to say “WTF Now?”

“Coach, let me try. Max, what hurts? Can you move your legs?”

“Dad, its my ass and yes I can move them I just don’t want to. Dang that was a good hit – wait till he plays QB – I’m gonna put a hurt on him!”

“Lets get some water boys!” I yell, “He will be alright.”

He was fine – ended up being his tailbone. First time you get popped in the tailbone is always a joy.
