The 911 platform is not off limits to other VWs
VW, Porsche to expand platform sharing; 911 platform not off limits
Porsche-VW Anschluss: The Worrying Bits | The Truth About Cars From the TTAC article, via Autocar: When asked if the 911 platform was also on the table [to be shared], Macht said it “could be made available to other VW brands” I wouldn't expect to see this, but it does open the door quite wide to a below-Boxster roadster for VW and/or Audi and/or Porsche.

When will we see a Porsche version of the Gallardo/R8 platform?

Volkswagen has Porsche roots, not the other way around.

Schumi is right.
I think opening up the 911 platform to VW/Audi is kinda crap. That needs to be a Porsche only thing... |

It won't happen as long as theres a flat 6 in there. That doesn't fit any other branding. People aren't going to buy a rear engined Audi that sounds like a 911. That is pointless.
The boxster is less of a pinned-down car, it could have a small inline 4 cylinder in the middle of it from another VW, and thus I could see a more entry level VW badged boxster/cayman sportscar. But the 911 chassis doesn't lend itself to any other type of car except the 911. It's one of the few cars which is so perfectly defined. Even the Ferrari Enzo is shared with the Maserati MC12.... but making something else out of the 911 just doesn't work.

On a separate slightly unrelated note... notice how a lot of manufactures are designing cars now with rear transaxles like the 924/928. Obviously the Vette has had it for a while, but the new Mercedes AMG's have rear transaxles, along with the new Lexus LFA.
Porsche was ahead of the time with that one. As were they with dual-clutch gearboxes which they tested in group C cars in the 80s.

I agree that a 911 is a warmed over 356 and a 356 is a warmed over...
But that is also saying that a Shelby Mustang is a warmed over Falcon. The original Vette had a straight six, but that doesn't have any bearing to the Z06 or ZR-1's of the past and current Corvette's. One could go on and on... All car's have their heritage tied to something. The 928's basic layout is the same as the American Pony car, does that mean a 928 is a Pony car (V8 up front rear wheel drive)? Its a retarded argument, that is always brought up by a non 911 owner. Bill |

The 356 is not a warmed over Beetle. It is Dr. Porsche's imagined sports coupe. It just so happens that they share drivetrain layouts - Ferdinand was not an engine designer and thus used what he had availible- and shared similar styling - which Ferdinand did for aerodynamic reasons and his own personal ideas of what cars should look like. But they are two different cars that are not based upon each other at all, even though they share components.
It is a retarded argument because whomever it is who always seems to bring it up is always the person who is first to gloss over the actual history of the circumstances. You can't just look at the cars, you have to look at the people and reasons behind the cars. Unfortunately, in today's world, shareholders are the people and money is the reason, nothing else. In the past there was more to it.
