personality / career assesments

Do you take any stock in them? any recommendations?

I am currently re-evaluating my "purpose" in life (again) but its sometimes hard to be objective and really see and understand what it is that you should do with your life.

I think there's some validity to it. I have a job now that I'm relatively good at. I hate it though, because I have a staff I didn't hire that's damn near impossible to being up to spec. My boss and the overall department doesn't care about what I do...it's a pointless exercise. Thus, I realize that while I'm good/competent at it, it's not what I should be doing. It's office work and I'm OK with that, but I find that since I don't enough authority, it's mundane and repetitive. I hate repetitive. I'm typically about conquering something and moving to the next thing. Even if it's similar, it can be different. I like tight deadlines and really pushing to get stuff done...this job isn't.

Unfortunately, it pays well. But I'm really looking. I understand myself well enough now, that I can see this pattern occurring a lot for me. I should really work for myself....maybe when the kids are older.

Since my company closed back in February I have been trying to look at the future in a positive way in that I had the chance to make some changes. A blank sheet of paper, so to speak.

I have a job now that has great insurance, is easy, and I like it but the money is not great at less than half of my previous salary. I took it for the benefits.

My vision 4 months ago was to open my own repair shop in 8 years. Now, I really don't think I can work on cars all day and be happy. I need to go to school and get a degree but finances/time are not abundant right now.

We are doing ok with regards to paying the bills but I really would like to do more. I just don't know what that "more" would be. Living in Michigan doesn't exactly help, either.

I've taken personality assessments before. They're interesting. I'm not sure how much they apply to careers. I did take a career test called "Self Directed Search" (SDS) once. It is geared directly towards showing you the type of work you may prefer. You get your "Holland Code". I was told that usually, your highest score would be your best choice of career and your second highest score is often a hobby or stuff that you enjoy doing in your own time.

Welcome to the Self-Directed Search...the world's most widely used career interest inventory!
