I talked to a guy in Denver about a '93 500E a few weeks back. Full E500 body upgrade, a few other little things, very nice car with full records, wire harness done, and rebuilt SLS. Good owner who has owned several 500Es as well as an E55. $10500 firm. Let me know if you want his info.

OK I should have said... "I thought the differences were........."
What do you mean rear suspension pick-up points...do you mean the location of the struts, sway bars, please clarify

onewhippedpuppy 10-26-2009 09:28 AM

PM replied. For some reason I forgot about that one until just now.

Hmm, yes...the one with the 19" Carlssons? Mighty nice example.

Hey Matt, I know you just got the Subie but if your interest is piqued on an immaculate Dinan E34 let me know.

Too bad about your choice to not go for a sorted out 928 they do make a great DD and with minimal servicing once the car is sorted they go for a long time if they get used regularly.

I am going to break ranks with everyone here and say a V8 Mustang. I bet you could find a servicable example for around half your budget, and spend the rest making it faster:D

My brother called me about a similar dilemma, although he is spending more like $6k. I told him Miata, especially because his tolerance for things breaking is low, and I've never heard someone speak ill of their Miata.

Look at page one, I suggested a Mustang Cobra.

slow&rusty 10-26-2009 02:15 PM

Matt - Got your PM...delicious...wow! Very wow...

A Miata is awesome, but just not enough zoom zoom for my hp fetish. I actually have a turbo miata motor in one of my old cars and it does boogie!

Mustang would be a good decision based on how cheap and plentiful (and they take great to mods), my personal favorite is the Fox Body....LX Trunk...bad boy! Beautiful cars.

I've been keeping an eye on the ex-police fox body Mustangs. They came with some extra go fast bits, and are easily under $10K.

Dueller 10-26-2009 03:05 PM

Well, if we're gonna talk <$10K amurican cars, may I suggest 92-95 C4 Corvettes w/6 speed? 300HP/340 ft/lbs torque?

Ebay quick samples:

70K miles and shall we call the color Aubergine? Buy it now for $10K

Or this 58K mile example Buy it now for $8990?

That said, my vote would be for the E36 M3.

It started life as a 325I, but one of the PO's lost an engine. PO then put the engine and tranny from a 98 M5 into it, plus all the suspension stuff, interior items, bigger brakes, Dinan exhaust, etc. So no, it's not a actual M3, but it will perform just like one and has 4 doors. I just have one M badge on the back, saying its a M of some kind. It's one sweet ride.

I love that style Mustang, and that one looks great. Those are some great cars and will make a great car for future modding.

slow&rusty 10-26-2009 04:30 PM

Totally forgot about the 6speed C4 vettes, next to the Grand National, LX Fox Body, one of my fav domestic cars...too many choices now..great I have a headache!

I have had a few of the cars listed and the E55 was a riot. I keep thinking as they drop to
10K I would get another one.

techweenie 10-27-2009 05:53 PM

Under $10K? I'd rather have a 911SC with some miles than most of these cars.

I've had some experience with the E36, and found it marginal on reliability and engineering -- though I've been spoiled by many, many 911s over the years.

Boxster is an excellent choice, for adding modern conveniences. You should get over the 'how it looks' problem by driving it in the twisties once a week or so.

An S4 928 is an interesting choice, but pray nothing goes wrong.

The Japanese cars mentioned are good cars, but just too butt-ugly for me (except the 3rd gen RX7).

Having said this, I realize I've pretty much turned into a Porsche bigot, but at my age, I've earned it.

porsche4life 10-27-2009 05:56 PM

I highly doubt you can get a cherry 3rd gen RX7 for less than 10k...

MAYBE trashed with a salvage title. That's about it. Amazing how much some of the '90s Japanese turbo cars are selling for.

A $10K 911SC will not be a good daily driver...so-so performance, terrible AC (Houston lets not forget), terrible HVAC (Houston lets not forget foggy windows), peeing oil everywhere, probably notchy shifting, bushings ready drop out, leather that will require Walmart seat covers, cracked dash...a true $10K 911...unless I am so out of the market that you can actually buy a decent one for $10K? Edjumacate me.

I see a 2001/2 E55 AMG and I am wondering how you can compare a mid '80s SC to it?

Friendly conversation not trying to start anything.
