World Superbike Finale
Spies on pole, Haga down in 10th. We know Spies can handle the pressure, he's shown the composure this year and in AMA. Will he be patient or will he set out to break the field right away? Will Haga self destruct? Haga deserves a title after leading most of the year and being close on other occasions, but I really want Spies to take the double tomorrow and win the WSBK championship to close out the season before going to GP.
CAN'T WAIT UNTIL TOMORROW!!! |

I'm hoping Haga gets it. He's a good guy and has been bridesmaid too many times. Spies is off to greener pastures next year, anyway.

Hard not to cheer on a fellow Texan. I was disappointed to see him moving to a satellite team in MGP next year, though.
Crazy how, if the electronics are "off" for a race, how they can totally blow it, isn't it? Kind of not fun that way and must be really bad for the rider.

Well, I feel bad for Haga and Japan, they were both due a world championship.
But as a Texan and American, I'm happy for Ben Spies. He carries on a tradition of Texas and near Texas motorcycle racers doing well on the world stage: Freddie Spencer (Shreveport, LA) Kevin Schwantz (Houston) Doug Polan (Dallas) Colin Edwards (Houston) Nicky Hayden (Kentucky, but raced a bunch in amateur Texas races) Ben Spies (Longview, TX) And all of these guys spent considerable time on my favorite track, Oak Hill, which is not too far from Longview, TX (or Shreveport, La.)

I feel badly for Haga as well, as he had control of the championship all year. Both riders had mis-steps along the way this year - mechanical issues, other riders taking them out of races, Haga getting hit by that bird, Spies running out of fuel, etc, etc.
Can't be happier for Spies though and you can't overlook / deny what he's done - 14 wins, 11 poles and WSBK Championship in his rookie year, on a new bike with a new team in a new series on tracks he hadn't ridden previously. |
