cell phone question

I'm loosing my company cell phone. (cost cutting issue). I've had a company cell for 6 years, and I'm baffled now that I need to buy my own phone. Anyway, I need to replace it, and my plan to date is to add a line to my wife's AT&T account.

Here's where I'm a bit lost...

What is the difference between Web access on a smart-phone and a PDA? Most smart-phones say they handle html. Web access on the PDA is an additional $30 per line. (That's $60 more a month since it's two lines.)

Why is the PDA Web access so much more? What am I missing?

...And yes, I asked at the AT&T store. It went something like this...

Me: So what's the difference?
Kid: The PDA is more organized.

Me: That's all?
Kid: Well, it does other stuff..

Me: What stuff?
Kid: Organized stuff...

Me

A PDA with HTML browser will be more like using a pc, and the pages will look the same. Non-HTML, not so much.

As far as networks, AT&T is nothing compared to Verizon. More 3g coverage (5x) and 4g is on the horizon, meaning upload speeds for Verizon is faster at at it's lowest end than ATT at it's top end.

I'm a non-luddite, luddite..

If my company didn't give me a cell phone, I would not have one today...

I use puters though...and have EFI on a 69 911..which I programmed myself..

They know that you're more likely to use more bandwidth on a PDA (push email, web browsing) than you would on a PITA, I mean a smart-phone.

So, they charge you more.

Like insurance on a sports car, or hurricane insurance on the Gulf Coast.

With AT&T the answer is iPhone.

You don't need to add to both lines.

You watch too many commercials - LOL!

ATT? Add a line to her family plan, buy an iPhone, pay the iPhone data plan. It is a great device. The Blackberries are better for email (physical keyboard) but not for web (clunky browser and screen too small). If all you want is voice, then no need for either.

Rob, I hope you don't mind I am jumping in for 1 question, only 1 I promiss. You probably want to hear the response too.
Will iphone and AT&T do GPS/Navigation?
Thanks.

The screen on the BB Storm and Storm II are one of the largest and highest resolution screens on the market. As for web browsing the BB is very good, it's not it's main function. The Motorola Android that is about to be released will be the best web browser to ever hit the industry. I tested one of the beta models last week.

The Storm was a dud. My coworker got one as soon as they came out, we all tested it, what a clunky thing. Maybe the new Storm is better.

The Android phones sound nice. But I got the impression the OP needs a phone today.

Ian

HHI944 10-27-2009 06:22 AM

I love my iPhone, but hate ATT. The motorola droid has me seriously thinking about switching.

slakjaw 10-27-2009 06:37 AM

targa911S 10-27-2009 07:14 AM

I have AT&T and I'm pretty happy with it. I didnt want the I phone because I wanted file transfer capability through bluetooth. I was told the I phone could not do that. I have the Samsung Eternity and it seems to handle most of what I do but there doesnt seem to be a million apps for it like the Iphone. The on screen keyboard isnt too bad to get used to..well at least with the phone sideways so you get the full keypad instead of the standard phone keys.

Seriously? Whats not to like about the iphone?

The browser is fantastic - I don't even use a notebook any more. There is an app for about everything you can think of - except Flash Video which is becoming less and less an issue with Mobile versions of sites.

I guess if its not Jailbroken there are some limitations, but Jailbreaking takes 90 seconds these days with (1) click of a mouse.
