Why a spoon?

For the longest time I thought tabs really was talking about actual Spoons and since I didn't care about that I never clicked. Then I realized it was a code word for guns. But I don't understand why. So why? Someone explain it to me????

Dueller 10-27-2009 04:44 PM

Because forks are fly rods...jeeez.;)

masraum 10-27-2009 04:50 PM

I remember one thread in particular where he posted photos of a spoon. That's the first that I remember. I don't know how that relates to the spoon=gun thing.

Dueller 10-27-2009 04:54 PM

Actually I think it goes back to 2002 in an OT thread about gun control...years before PARF. Leland Pate made a reference to spoons being used as weapons in response to a post by Tabby and Cam.

Post #76...first ever reference to spoons in OT.

That'd be just like tabs, to take some obscure reference and carry on forever. :)

You dare to question Ignatius?

legion 10-27-2009 05:41 PM

Do not try to bend the spoon — that's impossible. Instead, only try to realize the truth: there is no spoon.

Joeaksa 10-27-2009 05:50 PM

Hate to break it to you guys but Tabdula the Great also collects spoons... you know, like the ones you eat with...

I can't articulate it over the web, but the resemblance of the Ignatius J. Reilly character in Toole's masterpiece to the online persona of our fellow forumite is the definition of uncanny, IMO.

Shuie 10-27-2009 07:27 PM

I was under the assumption that a "spoon" was any collectable with a potential increase in value. firearms just seem to be the son's flavor at this time.

VINMAN 10-28-2009 03:48 AM

Didn't Tabby actually collect spoons also at one time??

daepp 10-28-2009 07:54 PM

My brother had the office next to the character IPR was based upon at USL. Apparently O'Toole was highly accurate in his descriptive efforts.

I've had brunch, dinner and cigars with Tabs. He is a very, very sharp person.

tabs 10-29-2009 06:09 AM

When you sup with the devil you had better have a long spoon.
