my stepdad gave me a beretta silver pigeon over/under shotgun!

sorry, i do not have a picture yet. i couldnt bring it home, because i was at my check-on luggage limit for southwest airline. it didnt fit in my bow-case, even taken apart. (plus it would probably bludgeon my archery equipment).

anyways questions: the shotgun has something i have never ever seen. it has swivel attachments for a sling. the one in the stock, it's typical..it is threaded into the wood, like a rifle sling attachment points. the front sling attachment point appears to be brazed onto the lower barrel. anyone seen this? i swear i have taken one hunting, that didnt have the sling attachments. is this a special model? the shotgun is fantastic, but i believe it is improved cylinder on both barrels. can i have screw in chokes installed? material is too thin?

he is searching out a browning citori to let me add to my collection. i think he has three of them....i am an over/under fan! a winchester 101, and i will be satisfied.

Nice... Does it look like this...

Also if you see one, a Winchester 96 is considered the "poor man's 101". Not many have heard of it. Both guns are made by Nikko. The 96 is the exact same gun as a Weatherby Olympian.

Oh and those barrels are wrong, they should be next to each other. ;-)

It would be weird to have both barrels be IC and IC. Maybe they are skeet and skeet. Usually they are like Mod and Full or IC and Mod.

Sling swivels are common on shotguns outside of the US and England. Everybody else uses them. You have one that was not made for the US market, that's all.

You can most likely install screw in chokes, but why? You will change the pattern far more with load changes than you will ever with interchangeable chokes. Save the money and purchase situation/target tailored loads.

Why is that? Different styles of hunting?

I would prefer, on long hunts, to have a sling. There are even times on dove hunts when repositioning with gear that a sling would be very handy.

Interesting.

i do. i like watching bird dogs work.

i have a kliengunthr O/U also, that has an full & modified config. i have vaporized a few pheasants with the full choke. no good. i get this new one, and maybe the Citori during a family gathering Christmas. my bro will drive it to denver, where i will pick it up.

unlike cheney, i love to leave the gun open until i need it. safety first. bird dogs give plenty of notice.

Interesting.
The US received it's shotgun style from England, where shooting (hunting) was the sport of Kings. The upper classes seldom carried their guns for any period. They had people to do that. Driven shoots and all that. This trend started in the early days of firearms and continues today for many. This fashion became the norm and as most like to emulate the upper-class, quite established. Hence, no slings.

In Europe, while things started off the same, the fashion was to take a twist and demand more personal involvement as well as a much larger areas for the shooter and Forrester (gamekeeper in the UK) to patrol. Add in the mountains (Alps, Pyrenees and Caucuses) and slings became the norm.

In most areas in Europe high-grade English style shotguns are still without slings, while European style shotguns of all grades will most often have them as they are exceedingly handy in the field.

BTW, anyone who has not experienced a good driven shoot in the UK is missing out on some of the best sport to be found on the planet Earth. I arrange these for myself and friends almost every year and if anyone would like to try one, just let me know.

Excellent. Thank you. Your shared knowledge of guns and hunting, as with others on this board, is a pleasure to read.

SxS's with a straight grip are the ne plus of grace and elegance in the shotgun world both in the US and Europe. Partly tradition and partly esthetics (slim, sleek lines).

But I have never witnessed any discrimination against O/U's. It is too late to book a decent shoot this year. If you want to set up a booking for next year we would need to have deposits (non refundable) in place by the end of April. Depending on the game selected, this will determine the date. The first two weeks of October is great for most species.

What are you interested in? Pheasants, Grouse or both? Do you want some Deer Stalking included? Fallow Buck or Red Deer or both? Rough shooting (what Americans think of as normal bird hunting), duck flighting (the most intense 15-20 minutes, you can experience in duck shooting), Wood Pigeon, Snipe, Black Game, Capricallia, Ptarmigan, Blue Hare, rabbits? Even trout or salmon fishing.

All are possible, but unless you are willing to book enough time, you will not be able to cover them all. May I suggest an agenda like this?

Sunday - Arrival
Monday - Rough shoot and duck flight
Tuesday - Driven shoot
Wednesday - Rough shoot or Deer Stalk
Thursday - Driven shoot
Friday - Rough Shoot or Deer Stalk
Saturday - Fishing or Rough Shoot or Goose shoot

On the driven shoots, the group must decide how many birds they want to be shown (how many are driven over the guns (shooters); 500, 1000, 3000, 5000 all on a per day basis. The more birds you as a group want to see the higher the cost.
A driven shoot will normally consist of 6 to 8 guns, smaller and larger groups can be accommodated, but may add to the per individual cost.

Split groups are possible, that is some want to do the rough shoots and duck flights but not the deer stalks. Or some will want only the driven shoots and deer stalks. As long as enough guns want to do the driven shoots, all the rest can be accommodated. Women are welcome, either in the field as guns, observers, or there are plenty of other attractions for them to see. Castles, Stately homes, beautiful villages, churches, shopping, art, dinning, etc.

A normal day would be as follows.

7am - Breakfast with the group
8:30 - 10 am - On site for your chosen activity
12 noon - lunch (depending what and where the activity is this could be a pub lunch, a packed lunch or a estate lunch between drives)
1:30 - Shooting resumes
3:30 - 4pm - end of driven shoots and rough shoots, deer stalking can go longer
5pm - duck flight travel and set up begins
8pm – Dinner with the group

It works very well if all of the party stays in the same hotel; it really simplifies the transportation and coordination of activities. And the Camaraderie is quite enjoyable.

Isn't that why they have that device called a "safety"? Having to close the gun, shoulder, aim and fire, sure takes a bit out of you reaction time I would think.
