Trying to copy some files to a CD - Help!

I'm trying to free up some space on my old laptop and want to move some pics and docs to CD. I keep getting a message that says "There was an error in the writing process. The disc you have attempted to write may no longer be usable."

I have tried different discs and even used an old version of Roxio that came on the computer and it too gives errors. I know the drive is ok because it both plays discs fine and I can use iTunes to burn a disc just fine.

I haven't had any problems with this before. Any good free CD burning software out there?

Update drivers yet?

Try turning off autoplay. I think that sometimes, during the writing process, the comp will try to read the CD, which breaks the writing process.

Also, if your burning program has the option to change the burning speed. If the max speed is 50, turn it down to something like 24x. Sometimes trying to burn too fast can cause problems.

Try Nero Burning Rom instead of Roxio. There are free versions on their website that you can download and use.

EAC Exact Audio Copy is the most technical one I have found. I will admit that I haven't done much with it - I just ripped somes cd tracks to wavs, but I have heard that it is the best. Not the easiest to use though.

And btw . . . it likes to have a cd in the drive when you open it . . .

No new updated drivers available. I tried turning off Autoplay with no joy. I'll try downloading Nero and see if that works.

FWIW, I've even tried using an external USB CD burner with the exact same results.

Well, got one of those, but I want something more "permanent" (archive).

stomachmonkey 11-01-2009 02:53 PM

CD's are not that permanent
I just buy hard drives, fill em and stick em on the shelf

Well, downloaded and installed Nero 9 (trial) and still no worky. I'm at a loss. Is it possible that there is something wrong with the drive? How can that be if I can burn a CD with iTunes?

Is this a combo CD and DVD burner?

You are definitely burning to CD and not DVD media?

dad911 11-01-2009 06:19 PM

if you have Norton turn it off.

david914 11-01-2009 07:22 PM

Yeah, it's a combo and I'm using CD-R blanks. Same pack that I've been using for the past couple of years.

No Norton, so that's not a factor.

What's really got me stumped is the fact that I get the same error using an external USB disc burner. It's got to be software related, but I have no idea where to look. I would have thought that loading a new and different burning program would have taken care of that though.
