I have a complete infatuation w/ old gas stations and dream of buying one, though not necessarily to live in. They just ruined one in So. Minneapolis when I was there to put in a Subway sandwich shop. It was in a prime location, too, 28th & Lyndale So.

I had driven by it a thousand times and never knew that there was a cherry, original Standard Oil station underneath the facade put over it for the previous business. When they started demo-ing for the Subway shop and revealed the white tile station w/ big red letters and stripes, I wanted to cry. The world, (and that city), was such an infinitely cooler place 30-40 years ago when there were old gas stations everywhere w/ the art deco style and the rubber hose that rang the bell for service when you ran over it. Not to mention free air for kids' bicycle tires, etc...

If I was richer, I would have bought that place and restored it to 1950s glory then used it as my own private repair garage and man cave + car/MC storage. Sucks. Subway for chrisakes...

I'd love to live in a gas station. My non-car friends think I'm daft.

This is a pizza joint over by my house. Not quite my taste, but something to work with.

Denis - even if you aren't rich, you can still work to get gas stations put on the Register of Historic Bldgs. (or some term similar to that).

Often, a historic bldg. can not only be saved, but turned into a good source of cash flow for the owner - say a nice Art Deco gas station becomes a nice Art Deco eatery.

I'd like to see more of these gas stations saved instead of being knocked down for some run of the mill cement blockhouse new construction. THose interested, should contact a historic preservation group locally. You might have to sell them on moving beyond old houses or churches...

I remember reading about some guy who renovated an old garage to live in. He spiffed it up to actually look like a real (albeit vintage) garage. He commented that every once in awhile someone would knock on his door asking for some sort of auto repair.

One of the big problems with old gas stations is is EPA clean up issues. Lots of old buried fuell storage tanks.

I live and have played gigs at the original Quaker Steak & Lube. It's about 10 miles from me in Sharon PA. Good food.
