Porsche Bicycle
Is this a good deal on this bike?
Here is the ad: I have this Porsche Mountain bike that I bought new about new about 10 years ago or so. It was a promo that i got from the Porsche car dealership. I paid about 2000 for it back then and rode it about 40 times. this bike is really fun to ride and is extremely light weight. This bike is not rideable right now for the following reasons: front brake needs new line front shocks need repair/replacement needs new rear shifter cable the rear derailleur is brand new and unused it is a deore LX by shimano. the factory derailleur wore out so i replaced it. I have the original owners manual that is like 300 pages or so. Some info from the book: 7020 alloy (AlZn4, 5Mg1) 60mm down tube for ultimate stability and structural integrity multiple powder coatings make the paint on this bike near indestructible a few features to point out: Shimano components Magura hydraulic brakes Rims are Rigida DP25s under seat zipper bag with original multi tool twist shifters 8 speed oversized rear cassette I feel the asking price is very fair considering the value of the components on this bike. I understand this bike needs some investment before it can be ridden again, but that is why the price is so low. Feel free to make an offer, but do not lowball me Pickup only, I will not deliver or meet you anywhere, i don't have a vehicle that will allow that. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Yeah, I think you can do much better and with a functioning bicycle. You should check out a dedicated bicycle forum - there are several on the internet. I'm not well versed with mountain bikes, but I know I've seen really nice rigs on the low side of $400 that are at least half this bike's age. And everything works.

I know nothing about bikes but that does sound like a decent deal. I'd try to get it for 350 or less though...

If you want it just to hang in your garage, that's not a bad deal. In fact, I would probably buy it if it were near me. Most of the Porsche bike ads I've seen have pretty high asking prices. The issue with those bikes is that they were never really that great. They were NOT lightweight like the ad says, mainly due to the component selection.
My Opinionated Comments: -The brake line is an easy fix for anyone who's worked on those brakes before. Those are some of the best rim brakes ever made, IMO. I have a bike with a set, and probably have spare parts if you end up purchasing the bike. -Those front shocks have always been crap. If they really need replacement, you are probably SOL. They are probably unobtainium, since it is a german shock that was never actively marketed in the US. -I could be wrong, but I don't believe the cranks and rear derailleur are original. They look too new to me. (whoops... just saw that bit of the ad) -Needs a new chain. -Probably at least $100 for parts and labor if you have a bike shop get it running. This is a much better deal: http://miami.craigslist.org/mdc/bik/1416784509.html

Unless the owner went out on hardcore 20 mile rides each time, I'd ask why all those things wore out after only 40 rides.

Mike55. that was my thought as well. 40 rides shouldn't trash a high quality bike. Maybe 10 enduros and 30 rides or something of that nature, with really hard landings and tough terrain.

Probably didn't know about chain lube. The fork is just low on air I bet, unless they've somehow screwed up the seals/bushings.

Just because it says Porsche, doesn't mean it's any good for what it is intended -- or that it ever was. If you want to just hang it in your garage as art, that's of course another story. I'd seriously check with a Mountain Bike forum on this. It might be a work of art, it might be a Walmart special. Caddy, Audi, Mercedes, Volvo, Saab, Jeep-Chrysler, and Ford all put out bikes to supplement their brand. The only one I know of that was worth anything was the Ford bike - and not because it said Ford on it - but because it was built by Kona, who produces really well-made tough race-ready bicycles up in Washington state.

Only ridden 40 times and the rear derailleur wore out? Hmmm... I do 24 hour mountain bike races and probably get 2 or 3 years out of a rear derailleur.
An old MTB that needs work goes pretty cheap. Old MTB's, like old cars, tend to be behind in technology. Every component on this bike is old and could use upgrading. The 8 speed rear is a giveaway. Alot of older frames can't be upgraded to 9 speed as most 9 speed wheels are too wide. No biggie, the 8 speed stuff is still around. This bike is cool. Not light, not fast, but definately cool. Even with what is wrong with the bike, I would still pay a couple of hundred bucks for it just for the cool factor. I'd love it at $250, would probably take it home at $300 and put a few parts on it for a ride. I'd just oooze cool riding this! If you are looking for a race bike, this has no value - just walk away. You'll spend more upgrading it than it's worth. angela

Interesting. I can barely find 9-speed anything for road bikes. It seems everyone's hoarding 9-speed Shimano thinking that was as good as it was going to get.
Now it's on to 11-speed and electronic shifting groupsets that cost $4,000. ![]()

Those don't use air, I have owned one since they came out (and an FS as well) and have a light rating from the factory, you had to order a heavy duty spring from Porsche.. As has been pointed out, there are much better riding bikes for the same or less $$$$ but not the coolness factor.. Let me know if you decide against it, I wouldn't mind have a beater one to change out a few things to ride..

Well, I am going to pass....it is on the orlando craigslist. Here is the link.
I appreciate all of the information. I thought it was very cool looking and thought it would be engineered to be fast. Oh well. Thanks again! PORSCHE Moutain Bike Magura brakes

I went through about 5 sets of HS Maggies when I rode trials. In fact, my single speed cruiser has a set of HS-33's on it, still. Good brakes, but certainly not the best. Avid V-brakes with Plaz pads or Spanish Fly pads were superior, and certainly more reliable. The Maggies offered better modulation, but 10 foot drop-offs demanded reliability.

Even though the bike was never much of a rider, (obsolete the day it hit the showroom) it did not deserve to be treated that badly. Even the front tire is on backwards - the chevrons should point forward on the front, (better for rolling resistance and cornering) backwards on the back (to "scoop up" the traction - but there is dispute on this)
As someone who loves bikes, I can say that the owner did not love that bike at all. - but that manual is pretty cool. Wonder if he would sell that? (dd- that is one flashy serotta!)

I was shocked that he didn't at least wash it before trying to sell it. If I was going to sell it, I would at least make it look pretty..... sales 101...
