Elbow surgery

I am going under the knife for elbow surgery Monday. I have torn my exterior ligament and will be having it surgically repaired. The Doctor says 6 months before I can expect to use it unimpeded again.
Has anyone ever had this type of surgery? Six months seems like a long time.
I'm now 48 but in good shape and usually heal quickly.
Would like to hear from anyone who has gone through this type of operation
Thanks
Steve

Rehab after an elbow or shoulder can be pretty tough. Do what they tell you, find yourself a good physical therapist, maybe even interview a few, if your surgeon does not have one picked out for you already. See about doing therapy on it pre surgery, sometimes this will help you recover more quickly after, other times it just does more damage.

No personal experience, I have been fortunate enough not to have needed elbow or shoulder surgery.

Wait, what type of elbow surgery are you having? What have you torn? "Exterior ligament" makes no sense. (No attitude implied with my question--it's just hard to give an answer if I don't understand the question.)

Sorry
I have torn the ligament that goes from the outside of the elbow up over the wrist, so if you where standing with your hands in your pockets it would be the one on the outside of the elbow to the for arm.
The MRI showed substantial rips and the Doc is going to go in clean up scar tissue, sew it together and reattach what needs to be re attached.
He says 3 days in cast then range of motion for 3 months then strength building for another 3 months

I've not had my elbows fixed but have had both shoulders and 6 months don't sound that out of line. Like Tobra said "do everything they tell you" and you will recoup faster. Good luck.
