Wow, really horrible. I can't even imagine being the guy that hit him. That would be very hard to live with.

The officer had been a mechanic in California for BMW/Audi/Porsche... May have even worked on cars belonging to the Pelicans on this board prior to becoming a CHP officer.

Damn sad. As much as I love motorcycles, it's really scary how quick you can be taken out even when you do everything right, but the other guy does just a little bit wrong...

This is why I never did and never will ride a motorcycle, despite how much fun they might be. Had he been driving a car, he would have been standing by the wreck exchanging insurance info.

Well, that's just terrible. Life is precious and you never know when it's going to end.

When your number is up, your number is up. I've been hit by a car on the hwy at speed while on my bike and didn't go down, not due to any riding skill. But my number wasn't up. I've been in a violent rollover in a Jetta, crawled out where the windshield once was, car was a mangled mess. My number wasn't up.

Agree with Rick too.
I was hit on my GSXR on the Staten Island Expressway. I went down doing 70. Busy highway, I should have been run over. Walked away with minor road rash on my arm.
My time wasnt up!

But riding a motorcycle (or skydiving, or robbing banks, etc.) tilts the odds in favor of the Grim Reaper.

Yeah, well, I'd rather die on my bike than die on my couch wishing I were riding a bike.

Truely a sad event.

Our flag was flown at half mast and I attended the service held at the Court House Gardens. I did not know the officer but went out of respect.

Sad story for sure.

Terrible things happen, but fear shouldnt stop one from living life to the fullest. Do you not swim in the ocean because sharks kill people? How many people die in cars every year? Those things are death traps. I love to ride motorcycles and fear will not stop me from riding. Death might, but not the fear of it. Taste death...live long!

That is why I never walk across the street!
My great uncle got hit by a bus in 1970.

Can we all opt for a higher number?

It's curious the driver went 45 feet after hitting and dragging the officer. Sounds like he was either speeding or incapable of stopping after the collision. At 68 years old, the driver's mental and physical condition could be a factor.

Sad to hear. But the news release also said he was "on duty" when it happened. No, he was riding his own cycle on public roads and had a accident. This little inforence infers that his family will be paid his full salary for the next 20 years as if he was working. I'm not sure about California, but so many other cities have this in their contract. I'm sorry that he died, but what is life insurance for?

"I'm sorry that he died, but what is life insurance for?"

Your statement sounds a little too institutional for me.

It said he had just testified in traffic court, but if this were true, he would be in uniform going to and fro in an official vehicle. Sounds like the guy did the killing cut the corner and was probably going pretty fast.

Too bad about the young officer getting killed

Riding a motorcycle is a little more dangerous than crossing the street.

The main reason I won't ever ride one is because of where I grew up. I grew up on Skyline Boulevard, above Woodside, CA. Skyline and La Honda Road are very popular routes for bikers.

As a kid, I saw and heard about more dead bikers than I can remember. I know, they were riding recklessly. But I know if I had a motorcycle, I wouldn't be able to resist doing the same. So I just stay away. Discretion is the better part of recklessness.

45 feet is about 3 car lengths, as fast as things happen in an accident I imagine it's a believable distance even if the driver was capable. Which he likely wasn't, considering he caused the accident.
