mary jane in the work place

I currently have a job as an area manager looking after a number of stores. To my surprise I found a little baggie and zig zag rolling papers on the mangers desk this morning. I know its not the managers because I was with her the whole day at a different location yesterday.

The guy who opened this morning may be a suspect. The girl who closed last night is also suspect. The girl starts at 1 today but fractically came in at 10 looking around the office, then back to the car then back into the office. She left saying "where did I put it" I was in the back in my office but I think its fairly clear whos weed it is.

My first thoughts are; I dont care just dont ever bring it in the office again. I will ask the first guy if it was his (i know its not) I will then ask the girl. If she doesnt admit it I think she has to go immediatly. If she does admit it I think she needs to be "spoken too" but more to the effect of "i dont care what you do in your personal time just dont ever bring it into the office"

Wha'da ya think

First, I would roll a few for myself....

Seriously, tell the girl you are going to ask her for an honest answer to your question and there won't be a problem.

Do you have a drug policy there? If you strongly suspect then have her pee in a cup.

I did take a pic of the "evidence" I also asked the guy if it was his. He adamantly denied it and I believe him. I also spoke to the store manager and apparently the girl in question wanted to do it when they we carving a pumpkin for Halloween. It was after hours but again pretty bad form.

Tell her it was caught on security cameras. Probably let it go with a stern warning if she fess's up...maybe a letter to each employee about drugs in the workplace.

update - just got a call from the manager, the girl called the manager crying, admited she left it behind (no one at this point had asked her about it) and thought she would be fired. Manager calmed her down and told her I would be speaking to her.

a fun day at work.

I hate to say it but she has to go. If your boss found out that you found it and did not fire her, it could reflect poorly on you. Maybe read up on company policy but I suspect they a zero tolerance as most employers do. And just for the record I am pro MJ just not in the work place.

most likely she pulled it out before going home and forgot. probably on the phone.

not much the poice could do. hard to prove who it belongs to. might even cause problems for the manager since it was on her desk.

you might have a off the record talk with the girl and tell her to keep the stuff at home.

It's pot, who cares?

Why make an issue out of it at all? Throw it in the trash, end of story.

If you catch her red handed then I would say its ok to ditch her, otherwise you are making judgement with out evidence. Can you honestly make that kind of judgement? Did you take finger prints off the baggie? Can you prove that she was smoking at work, maybe she rolled one for the drive home? Are you Judge Judy? Is your head that far up your arse that you can't see the light of day? How much is she getting paid, retail worker , probably minimum wage, its not like murder, is she good enough of a worker to keep? How old are you? Do you smoke? To screw somones life over for a joint of weed is so stupid that it makes you look like a total A hole. Wake up, its the 21st century and it will be legal in a few years, so settle down, grab a paper and roll one and chill.
Dave, step back a bit, wait a couple of days and make a subtle comment and drop it, you and said worker will be better off in the long run.

THE GIRL ADMITIED IT IS HERS!

She isnt going to be fired, Again I will restate what I said before. She will be spoken to and told to leave it at home, end of discussion.

it is a bit of big deal because we have local and provincial police as customers and they are frequently in the office. I dont think a little mary jane is going to hurt anyone but there is a time and a place, and thats not at work.

Immediate termination and a phone call to the proper authorities.

Problem solved! (I shoulda gone into management).

Edit: If she's a bush pig, call the cops and have her escorted out...

How old is she? Is she considered a good employee? On time? Absences? Good with the customers?

I've had the conversation with staff before. "Repeat after me. Don't bring it in under any circumstances. Don't use before work under any circumstances." End of conversation. No lecturing or additional dialogue.

She already understands that she F'd up and what it could cost her.

The fact that she came clean without being asked is points in her favor.

I think you are taking the correct approach.

What are you, the pot nazi?

If it were me, I'd rather find a little weed than empty bottles stashed. A little recreational pot probably won't affect job performance, but drinking on the job almost certainly would.

Nobody says mary jane anymore. Weed is the word de jour

She admitted it. Give her a break.

One of my "dirty hippie" tenants just moved out and left a pile of clothes. Before turning them in to Goodwill, I dug through the pockets. TWO bags o' weed! Fed 'em to the rabbits.

I agree that this would be a rational response.

ohh man, lets just day she was in "public relations" before. She also drives an Aztec, so she has a fairly clear history of questionable decisions.

I find the poplar opposite arguements of this interesting, I guess I am somewhere in the middle.

She isnt a bad employee, actually quite good. I spoke to her in the parking lot of a coffee shop across the street. She saw me crossing the road and came to talk to me. We spoke about it being a mistake and that it wasnt appropriate in the work place ever. I think the way she handled it was good and I can be pretty sure it wont happen again.
