I will regret to my dying days that I passed on an opportunity to purchase (fairly cheap) a double barrel ten-gauge. The guy claimed to be a bush pilot and used it to scatter any beasts that were in his way before his final approach. 'Twas a thing of beauty!

If it's what i think it is (market gun) it was used around the turn of the century (20th for you younguns) to shoot waterfowl. As they'ed come in you would blast them, dropping 10 at a time to sell at the market. Thankfully was banned early 1900's.

Exactly what it is Craigster. I don't think it's a BP gun. Early nitro.

I see 10 ga. pretty often. They are still out there for the manly men. This is the first 4 ga. I have ever seen. A relative to the punt gun I would think. |

My dad used to talk of seeing large gauge shotguns on swivel mounts on the bow of small prams or flatboats in the salt marshes around Georgetown SC. They were too large for any man to hold while firing. This would have been in the mid-1920's.

A friend of mine had a really beautiful rifle that I would have LOVED to shoot...
I think it was called a Sharps. It was hand made, engraved and (If I recall correctly) shot 50 caliber black powder cartridges. I might be wrong on what it shot, but I'm pretty sure that's what he told me. He said it was loud and smoke 'n fire blew out when you pulled the trigger! COOL! Now regarding that "punt gun" in the previous post... Good Lord... angela
