My BIL is a serious BBQ snob and has one and really loves it. I think the variety of woods you can get is pretty neat.

if you want to be bent over by the cost of the pre-fabbed presto-log hockey pucks, go for it.
real men don't do pucks. Hunk of real wood. Nothing else. Smoking Meat Forums - Active Threads The Q Joint |
Yeah, get you some pecan or apple, whatever floats your boat, soak your wood chips adequately, and you can get some pretty good results in one of those cheapo smokers.

Traegers are made about 25 miles from where I live. Everyone I know who has one is a raving fan. About 10 years ago I used to sell Mr. Traeger some parts for his smokers. Small world.

If anyone is interested in buying some wood, I live in Seattle and sell boxes of Alder or Maple just for wood smoking on bbq's or smokers.
As we can't get Pecan wood up here, and elsewhere in the states people can't get alder/maple. I've sold to many people in the south east this way. I cut hockey puck sized rounds (1" x ~ 3-4") and pack them in sawdust too for about 7-8 pounds of wood in a Flat Rate USPS shipping box 8x11x5 that costs $10 to ship, and I ask $10 for the wood. I can ship either wood pucks, or if you want long splits I can pack that too. so $20 paypal to me gets you a big box packed full of wood chunks. I have green and fresh that smokes good on hot coals or well aged that is bone dry and should be soaked for 10-20 minutes in water and is better used for propane grills. PM me if you want a box of Alder or Maple from Seattle and the Pacific North West. It's simply awesome on Salmon, and any other Fish or Chicken or even beef or pork for that matter. |
The best meal that I've ever had was off a Traeger.!

The Outdoors writer at my paper took an early retirement buyout and has opened a barbecue place. He uses a big Cook Shack that does a fabulous job. So good, in fact, that one of the other photographers on our staff has bought a home-sized version and I'm planning on getting one in the next few weeks. They rave about it and the meat is delicious coming from it.
