A small town weekly lists fuel prices
From The Lebanon Express:
"In the Lebanon Express on November 19, 1959 Bids to supplu the city with gasoline and fuel oil for next year were opened and accepted by the Lebanon City council. Successful bidder on Gasoline was the Tidewater Oil Company, with prics of 25.49 cents a gallon for premium gas and 22.9 cents a gallon for regular grade. Shell Oil's bid of 12.4 cents a gallon for heating oil was accepted as the other low bid...." Gives a clue what 50 years of inflation does...Keep in mind, in 1959, USA currency was backed by precious metals...

I started driving in 1969 or so. Still remember paying 19.9c a gallon for gasoline.
Its taxes that have driven up the price of driving, plus the cost of oil. Only in recent times has diesel fuel, which takes the least time and energy to distill and filter, has been this expensive. In my area its higher than Premium, and most of that cost going to taxes.
