1 gun, 2 dogs and 3,000 miles...
Driving Directions from Encinitas, CA to Mobridge, SD
In mid November, I'm meeting a former employee and his party in Mobridge, SD. Target: Pheasants. Grouse as a side game. What I'm looking for from the braintrust is areas to hunt along the way. It's a 24 hr slog up there and I'd like to get the hounds out and let them stretch their legs. No preserve shooting...public or private is ok. Grouse, chukar, quail or pheasant are fair game. Most states offer short term licenses for upland, so it doesn't just have to be in SD. TIA!

vizslas...very hard to keep out of your lap. At least as smart as my old German Shorthair. Very protective...always know when someone is walking by.

Have you read "A Hunter's Road" by Jim Fergus? Great book about traveling cross country with his dog bird hunting. Might be some suggestions in there. Sounds like a lot of fun, bringing any SxS's?

If you decide to take a northern alternative route up through Sacramento let me know...love to shoot some quail and pheasants with you.
Good luck on your trip...you have to of the best companions a man could have. Richard

I love Vizslas. My favorite breed along with Boxers. If I had the space I'd have one in a heartbeat, but they need a yard - and preferably a *big* one.
Sounds like a fun trip, but cold once you get up north. |

Actually it was the Red Army that was turning the breed into rations. Germans and Hungarians were on the same side. Beautiful dogs, if you come through the Flathead we have the Ninepipes Bird Mgt Area but season doesn't open until the 12th or 13th.

If it was me I would take interstate 40 west to U.S. 83 north in the Texas panhandle. From there going north is nothing but pheasant and quail hunting through those states this time of year.

Just got my Pheasant tag today. I hunt Nebraska Pheasants. There is a really good spot I go to south of Sioux City good numbers in Dixon county.
If you end up driving back south through NE, PM me and I will give you some decent spots. |

gotta love those pups
I grew up with these dogs...they have slept in our beds, pushed us off the couch with those long legs and mastered the kitchen counter swipe.
The pic is of Angus and me hunting Mt. Quail last weekend...yes, that's duct tape around my boot, I forgot my gators. ![]()

Good thinkin' Kyle...I've got another guy that used to work for me in NE...maybe stop by and see him. Good Luck Goat...weather's still warm over there. Have a Coues deer hunt there in Dec. We need to hook up w/ Rick and meet somewhere in the valley w/ the hounds, would be a blast. I'm glad you guys don't spoil your dogs too

Did you go yet? I am curious to see how the numbers are this year. I have been hearing good things from others.
