Other countries are learning. Germany requiring a contract with immigrants

This has just come up in the Berlin Govt trying to get immigrants to become a productive part of society, not just merge with others from their former country.

Wonder if our current politicians here in America would ever have the balls to do something like this?

Berlin plans 'integration contract' for immigrants

Online: Berlin plans 'integration contract' for immigrants - The Local

The government is planning to institute "integration contracts" for immigrants to encourage them to become contributing members of the country’s society, Germany’s integration commissioner announced on Monday.

The new contract, a goal for the current legislative period, will elaborate on what kind of support immigrants can expect from Germany, in addition to “what we expect from the immigrants,” Maria Böhmer told daily Stuttgarter Nachrichten.

“All who want to live and work here for the long run must say yes to our country,” she continued. “To this belongs proficiency in the German language, but also a readiness to take part in society.”

German values, such as freedom of speech and equal rights for women must also be recognised in the proposed contract, said Böhmer, a member of Chancellor Angela Merkel’s conservative Christian Democrats.

In response to controversial comments about Berlin’s failing Turkish and Arab community made by Bundesbank board member Thilo Sarrazin in September, Böhmer told the paper she had been stunned by his statements.

“There are indeed large city quarters with parallel societies,” she said, but added that when Sarrazin was serving as Berlin’s finance minister, he failed to take action.

“When one did nothing to improve matters and then makes such statements while no longer holding responsibility, then I can only react with astonishment,” she told the paper.

“Regarding the necessary debate over poor school achievement, there must also be a discussion over those who get their high school diplomas, study, start companies, or become engineers, doctors and lawyers,” she told the paper, adding that these immigrants are part of the “economic success of our country.”

Good idea. I hope it turns out well for them. If it works for them, then maybe we can get something similar.

Why would anyone want to go to Germany?

At the risk of getting political, for the free health care (that you are taxed to death for) of course! As well you get to drive Porsche's on the Autobahn "at speed" when there are no traffic jams.

Course you as well get to pay up to 80% tax and $6 a gallon of gas, so better bring that Porsche with you as you will not be able to afford it once you get there!

Great idea, but would never even get considered here. First problem is that illegals don't come to the US to become Americans or to assimilate in any way. Since they're already lawbreakers, why would a new law affect them? Second problem is that we have countless whiner/do-gooder groups who would howl discrimination and racism, were such an idea seriously discussed in the US. Would simply never happen.

Germany, for all its flaws, knows how to fix problems. We only make them worse and then find a way so that they don't affect us too much.

I've already got friends over there... sometimes I wonder whether things are more screwed up here or there.
