Need Good Head-Hunter / Agency in Va
I may be approaching this somewhat bass-ackwards...................I want to transition out of the auto industry and into most anything else that requires high degree of technical/problem solving skills.
I believe that in this challenging economy I feel that I am almost helpless in trying to search and find a good job/career via conventional job sites and on line/print postings. Most good jobs that lead to careers are never posted or listed outside of the corp. I think that I would be better suited to find a head hunter or agency/agent where I could offer a $$$ "bounty" to help/direct/ aid me find my next gig through their resources and contacts. Help - ![]()

Not trying to be negative, but there are about a million other people doing the same. I tried for the last year and gave up. A more unconventional approach won't hurt.

Yea, see the problem is all the recruiters have a pile of 500 resumes on their desk for the 2 jobs they are trying to fill.
They will cherry pick the one resume with the exact experience from the candidate in the exact geographic region to try and fill the job. And so will the 20 other headhunters trying to fill that same job. Therein lies the problemo with the current job market.

All that said, I've connected with a few by using LinkedIn. You can search for key words like "recruiter Virginia aerospace" or whatever. Then contact that person (call on the phone) and connect with them in LinkedIn. Then you will be in their network and you can see their connections which may be useful for further networking.

No I do not. I have: a AS in Business Management ('81). IT experience 3-years A+ / MCSE -NT ('99) - Close to 30 yrs in the auto business -full service repair side (starting '79) - BMW certified / ASE Master cert Tech since '82 - Strong background in electronics - component level diag/repair/modification.
In IT I had exposure to: telephony programming/install-configure/physical routing - internal and external security program/install/back-up I have also managed and owned auto shops (2) / employess/ responsible for P&L / Shop Foreman, tech, etc. Ideally with my back ground and skill set I would like to transiition into security systems install - repair on commercial, home accounts; on a tech level then move up quickly. Fed govt or sub-contractor where my combination of skills and experience would lend themselves to manufacturing, repair, R&D, etc

A recruiter is unlikely to help. They are paid to take a security system installer from company XYZ and move them to company ABC. The company is probably paying the recruiter around 20% of the persons salary so they want as close to as a complete match as possible.

I'd recommend you either moonlight or PT in your next chosen field and slowly transition from one to the other - as in 8 hours auto - 4 hours security for 6 months - then try and split - then do more on on the security end - then leave your auto career behind - then you have one year of security experience.
Even if you have to do it for free for 3 months 2 hours a day (or whatever) to gain the experience/contacts. It's never easy to make a career change - even worse in this economy. I use the michael jordan analogy = He's an athlete -right? they paid him 4M a year to play basketball - but when he decided he wanted to play baseball he got the league minimum. Two toughest industries to transition out of right now are Mortgage and Auto with residential construction pretty close behind. I am not a headhunter - but I do work in the employment field - [which has gone from around 400,000 jobs in 2006 to less than 100,000 positions].

Any other suggestions on locating / finding that position ? What sites, if any besides C/L and Monster are good for discovering a technical gig?

Hmm...home security industry?
With your skill set you should be able to find and negotiate rebranding contracts with 3rd part equipment suppliers and monitoring co's and set up your own alarm co. Understand that the upper end of this market is probably moving strongly in the direction of smart home integration (ie central controls of all electronic home functions) and this might take some work to get up to speed on.

Most of the security guys I know, who are small one man shops do dish/satellite (TV and internet) installs, home theater, low voltage stuff also, beware though--most are struggling now...in the boom times they did very well. I would go with a larger company and learn the ropes before going out on your own.
