Ducati 620 motor: Good to learn on?

A local guy has a 2006 Duc 620 motor for sale. Wiring harness is there, but no ECU, headers. Motor mounts are both cracked, rear one nearly sheared off.

I want a motor to practice working on. I am only interested in 2V motors. Any reason I should avoid the 620? Is it radically different from other Ducati 2V motors?

Guy wants $550 for the motor, prolly take $500. It only has 14 miles on it! A gal bought it and wadded it up bad on her first ride.

I'm posting this here because frankly PPOT gets more traffic than most Duc forums.

Any advice appreciated.

What do you want to do with it?

If you just want to tear it apart and learn the mechanics, there is really no significant difference from the 750, and only clutch (dry) and gearbox would be significantly different on the 900/1000 2v. There are some differences with the DS heads, but to my knowledge mechanically they are very similar.

However, it won't be much good without the electronics, and they are extremely (i.e. prohibitively) expensive from the dealer.

It would make an excellent go-cart motor if you can sort the eletronics :)

If you are trying to learn just maintenance things, you really don't need a spare motor to do that (including valve adjusts, it's not that hard). You can learn as you go on your bike, lots of people DIY these and there is a ton of information available (service manuals, and internet sites).

If you want to tear the whole thing down and build it back up again, that would be a pretty cool project. Whether it's worth $500 . . .
