Windows 7 problem -wireless internet question
 

any computer tech guys have any suggestions?

im running windows 7 on a new computer. my wireless connection gets dropped about 5 times an hour. when i trouble shoot, the computer fixes the problem right away and i get a message that says " wireless adapter or access point unplugged or broken - fixed".

Thankfully i can reconnect without much effort but this should not be happening. im close to the wireless router provided from Roadrunner (about 20 feet away, separated by 1/2 wall).

I have a 5 year old Toshiba running Windows XP sitting right next to the Windows 7 computer and do not have this problem.

The specs info regarding the Windows 7 computer says I have this equipment:

"Be ready for the next platform in wireless connectivity with the integrated quad-mode Intel Wireless 5100AGN Wi-Fi chip. Based on the draft 802.11n Wi-Fi specification, it offers up to five times the performance and twice the wireless range as existing 802.11g wireless. It's also backward compatible with 802.11b/g networks (commonly found in home routers and Wi-Fi hotspots) as well as 802.11a networks (which has a higher throughput, but more limited range--great for closed office environments)."

--I have made sure the power saving options for the wireless adapter are set to maximum performance....so, im out of ideas and cant find info on the web anywhere.

any ideas or similar problems or suggestions? thanks

check if the driver for the wifi card has seperate power saving options
turn em off

check if you can set the preamble on the wifi card, and on the router
set them all to long preamble only.


Check if you have an option to control roaming tendencies
If possible, set to the least setting : eg, the one that does not make the card look for possible other AP's, and stick to the one it has.


Is all your hardware 11N ? if so, set all your hardware to N only
If not , set all of it to G only and see if that helps

My guess is that you may be able to upgrade/change drivers to fix the problem. Sometimes Windows is better and sometimes the driver from the manufacturer is better. If you try one different from what you're using now, make sure they both aren't trying to work at the same time. You can usually click a box to tell Windows not to manage a wireless connection (at least you could before 7).

im not finding any driver options and intel's website's driver identification program didnt see it. think ill call the manufacturer of the computer (sony). thanks. im hesitant to download any drivers at this point.
