What did you think of Fleming's Prime Steakhouse and Wine Bar?

Considering going there or Ruth's Chris for my wife's bday next weekend. If you've been, what did you think of it? TIA.

The Fleming's in Birmingham, Ala. was fantastic last time I was there.... that's been a long time ago. The ribeye I had was about the best steak I'd eaten up to that point.

Went there last week, had the bone-in fillet. It was excellent. Not a fan of Ruth Chris.

I've never understood why anyone would go to a steak house, no matter how fancy. Good god, you can fix your own steak at home. It's easy. REALLY easy...

Why not go somewhere and order something you wouldn't fix at home?

That's the dumbest thing I've heard in a while.

Have you ever heard the breaking news that some people travel for a living and are not home to cook dinner? As well some people want to give the wife/girlfriend a break and go out to somewhere nice for a change?

I do agree that I can cook a better steak than 95% of the places out there, but there are times that its just nice to go out.

They get first choice of prime beef, which is around one percent of beef sold in the US. Second, restaurant kitchens use much higher heat than home kitchens.

As for Flemings, they wet-age rather than dry-age their beef. Dry aged is better.

Wet age beef just uses vacuum to age the beef and its faster. I don't think most people can tell the difference.

Wet aging is cheaper, which is why many inferior steakhouses use it. Any foodie will tell you dry aged steaks rules. I'm local to an abbatoir, who dry ages strip steaks for me for three weeks-just about perfect.

That is not even close to the dumbest thing I have read here, and I have a few of them on ignore.

I tend to order stuff that I am not as likely to make at home when I eat out.

My Father dry ages meat and you really can tell the difference, flavor and consistency.

I understand. However, I guess the thing about really great restaurants for me is the chef or staff's ability to take something exceedingly familiar (like steak, maybe) and knock my socks off with it. So, in that regard I think that maybe the Capt. is missing out if he won't give Morton's or something a try just because he knows how to cook a steak well at home.
