? when selling a car

I have my SC for sale, and cringe everytime I let someone drive it. The last guy stalled it 8 times and forcefully put it into third to quick, causing a loud clunk. It was rebuilt as was the engine. So do you guys let people drive them? What recourse do I have if they break something?

Very few people have driven my car and if I was selling it, I'd be very picky about letting someone test drive it. I would accompany them...

I sold my SC for full asking price and the buyer didn't even ask to test drive it beforehand. Most of the cars I've bought, I test drove without the seller going with me. Several times, both with BMW's and Porsche's, the sellers just tossed me the keys and said to be careful.

It's funny, I never ask to drive any of the used cars I have purchased before I ask the owner to drive it on the test drive with me in the passenger seat.

I get a much better sense of how the car was treated by watching the driver. Plus I get to pay attention to the sounds of the car rather than worry about traffic.

If the first drive goes well, I may ask to switch places.

Honestly, it is an old maintenance test pilot trick in helos: the guy not moving the sticks is usually running the flight.

Once test drive a 944/2 , it drove very well, ok'ed on the price, and stopped at an atm.
Dude goes, let me drive it one more time back to my place( few clicks up the road).
I'm like, ok

He get's in, revs the snot out of it... and dumps the clutch...
And sure enough, a very obvious whine appeared from the back... he broke something in the transaxle...

Good thing i hadn't payed yet, i walked

I always give them a ride first. If they are still interested after my attempts to scare the sh** out of them I nail down a deal. If it's someone I know or if they drive up in a nice car and seem credible than I let them drive it while I ride with them after I give them my introductory ride. Most of the time they buy it before they drive it.

I tried to sell my motorcycle. Some guy came over and seemed interested and wanted to take it for a test drive. I let him take it out for a quick spin. That was a big mistake as I could hear my poor bike's open exhaust screaming all the way to its 10,000 rpm redline through every gear. He came back and gave me a $100 nonrefundable deposit to hold the bike. A week later he canceled the deal so I kept the money.

I learned a lesson that day.

Bought my 79 without driving it. Let the PO drive me around in it (didn't have plates on it)
Got back to his place, gave him a check for it. I never drove it till i picked it up a week later
and drove it 150 miles home.

Honestly, you need to "Prejudge" the person the best you can before you guys go out for a drive.

A good buyer will appreciate watching you drive the car.

I've learned more about these cars watching the owner drive them than I have driving the same cars myself. That's just me, though!

.....stalled it 8 times...... the guy does not know how to drive. I would have asked him to stop after the second stall. No one stalls a car unless it is a serious racing car and they got caught off guard. ONCE.
