Too many farewells

We bid farewell to our third cat in two years today--our fourth pet in 3 years. We're having one hell of a bad run with our pets.

She had suffered kidney failure about 5 years ago. With subcutaneous hydration for about a month she finally recovered from that, but over the past 6-9 months she'd been losing weight steadily. Last night and today she started heading downhill quickly--by the time we got her to the vet today she would just lie on her side and blink without moving much at all.

The local "emergency animal clinic" wanted $157 for the euthenasia plus $80 for cremation. Fortunately we know a local horse vet who took care of it for $45. Plan B was a .22....glad I didn't have to go that route.

We have but one pet left, our tripod cat that we got shortly after moving into our home in '99.

Here she is with our son, about a year ago. She sure was tolerant of his horseplay!

I am sorry for your loss. It is obvious from the picture that your cat was well loved.

Are your cats "indoor" our "outdoor" cats? I never let my babies outdoors. Too much they can get into and lifespan is estimated @ 3 ~ 5 yrs.

All of our cats were indoor cats. The one we lost today would bolt outside periodically but she always slunk back shortly thereafter.

Hmm...diet? Tap water? Pesticides?

That's a lot of sick cats in a short time.

Actually, all three cats were different causes --

1) Unknown, no necropsy done -- probably kidney failure
2) Had to be put down due to recurring bladder stones and resulting huge surgery co$ts
3) Old age and kidney failure 5 years ago

I have a strong suspicion the first kidney failure case was due to the cat food from China debacle....

Were they the same breed? Certain breeds have chronic health issues...

Sorry to bug you, but I'm very interested in the subject.

Nope, all mutts. Pedigrees unknown. Two "domestic shorthairs" (female) and one "domestic longhair" (male). Our tripod is an orange tabby. Oddly she's the one who has never exhibited any problems, other than missing a front leg!

There was a spat recently of bad Chinese pet food causing pet kidney problems. Apparently the manufacturer was adding a chemical which fufilled the test for protein content.

I looked up the ingredients and most of the "best brands" (Eukanuba, Science diet, Purina) have corn fillers as a major ingredient.
Dogs may be omnivores but cats are meatavores.

Evo(pricey) has no grain fillers, and Solid Gold Indigo Moon uses potatoes with a minimum 46% protein.

Sorry to hear this, I just had to put down my cat that had been with us for almost 17 years. I got him as a kitten. He'd been through a lot, had 1/2 his ribs removed on one side for cancer. I'm glad that we had the time together.

It's hard to say goodbye.
