Caveat,,,,that couple with the motorhome did that a few years ago and became a scapegoat for the DMV. To make their point to the rest of the masses the Gov't fined the couple 10,000 dollars. Just sayin',,,,,,,,,

Still gonna have to explain the primary vs. secondary residence thing, and why the federal return didn't match up.
I don't have a solution. I do know someone that lived in SF and had a p.o. in Napa, which cut his insurance in almost half. Why those companies are still allowed to discriminate using zip codes and credit scores is beyond me. |

Hmmmmmmmmmmmm, do you know someone who knows someone up there that would loan you their address? A fixed address is probably gonna be required. I, too, plan on moving north, and have been trying to figure out the license plate thing for a while.

They will most likely ask for a couple of utility bills with your name and Oregon address before you can register your car and get a DL.

you need to rent a tumble down shack somewhere - E. or S. Oregon would be cheapest. Then Xfer to your new Ore. address when you move.
You do NOT want to do anything fraudulent - the DMV is aware of what people (used) to do -- and started cracking down a year or 2 ago. They do various checks, and you do NOT want to get caught. |

You could go to a private p.o. box business and use that as your mailing address. Many small towns in WA have them; they're reasonably priced and very friendly.
For example, instead of giving the DMV the box #, you would give the address as the street address of the p.o. box business, plus your box number: 600 State St. #121 So it looks like a street address. A lot of people in WA do this. Not sure if it would work in OR. |

I'm not planning on doing anything fradulent, not my style....I'm a retired County Investigator. Not worth my pension.
I simply want to have Oregon insurance, license and registration as mine is about to expire in CA and I'm moving up there anyways.... |

I think the UO has an online apt. finder bulletin board - also there are a bunch of big mgmt. co.s here who could probably just rent to you with a credit card online or by phone
the city has a minimum habitability requirement for rentals, so that limits what kinda shack you could rent - what town/area are you planning on moving to? might make it all easier... an apt. is usually $300 & up here in the student ghetto areas - I'm sure it can be done more cheaply in E. Oregon... |

do you really want to get an ODL now?
- not sure if an in-person is req'd. But there are loopholes for a lic. plate: a vehicle may qualify for Oregon registration even if the owner is not a resident of Oregon or domiciled in Oregon if one or more of the following applies: * The owner is a business that maintains a main office, branch office or warehouse facility in Oregon and operates motor vehicles in Oregon; * The vehicle is usually left in Oregon when the owner is away from Oregon, is used primarily for personal transportation in Oregon, is a private passenger vehicle or a vehicle having a loaded weight of less than 10,000 pounds, and is not a motor home or a camper; or * The vehicle is operated in intrastate transportation for compensation or profit for other than seasonal agricultural work. for #1, you could register w/Sec. of State as a sole prop. biz, set up a branch [or have the main office here], then operate the vehicle here. |

Why go through all the trouble for a quasi-legal license and registration? Why not do the California thing re insurance etc. until you actually move to Oregon? If you are that concerned regarding how you might be perceived as a "Californicator", why not drive to the border, or fly in to wherever, rent an Oregon plated car and do your Oregon business or whatever until you make up your mind?
Or am I missing something here? Best, Tom
