Your body gets walloped all the time, without you knowing it.
It's not because you get a vaccine for the potentially dangerous stuff that your immune system stops working. (if anything, your immune system will improve with less effort)
If you are unlucky, and you get infected with the H1N1 virus, your immune system might not react in time to produce enough antibodies, and that's when you will wish you had the friggin' flu shot.
It's like a safetbelt in a car, you use it, just in case.
Better have a condom and not need it than needing one and not have it....

But then again, you being so closely related to the antichrist himself, you probably have antibodies enough.... :D:D:D:D

slodave 12-11-2009 01:46 AM

So Stijn, ever had a tetanus shot or are you going to let your body deal with the rusty nail after it pierces your foot? :D

svandamme 12-11-2009 02:02 AM

tetanus is something different from the flu, it doesn't change every so often. it's a bacterial infection , not a viral.

G-man, you're right, my mum is pretty much the antichrist, and nobody knows how, cause both my grandparents were practically saints..

slodave 12-11-2009 02:12 AM

Same principal Stijn.

svandamme 12-11-2009 02:39 AM

it's not.

Accute tetanus desease is caused by a neurotoxin that is inside the bacteria, the bacteria themselves don't do much harm when alive, but when they naturally expire, the toxin inside of them enters the bloodstream.

You cannot become immune by your own to the toxin because it's lethal in a minute dose.
the LD50 is 0,000 000 001 gram per kilo...
that's a 50/50 chance of death, if you weigh 100 kilo, and have 0,000 000 1 gram of it in your bloodstream...

There's a reason why they had to develop the vaccine from horses, not humans.
apples & oranges.

slodave 12-11-2009 02:47 AM

Oy vey!

Wuss.

Geronimo '74 12-11-2009 03:00 AM

So, vaccines against: Yellow fever, Tuberculosis, typhoid, Heppatitis A and B, Polio,Haemophilus influenzae type b....
All useless??
Better to let your unprepared immune system have a stab at them instead of vaccinating??
I just think H1N1 should be in that list too, and since I am one of the higher risk groups, I got the shot.

beepbeep 12-11-2009 03:30 AM

Got my H1N1 shot yesterday. I'm firm believer that vaccines should be taken, if they exist.

svandamme: you don't get it. Vaccine IS a weakened virus which is introduced in the body in order for body to produce antibodies. Thus, it's better to "introduce" body to viruses in controlled manner (trough vaccine) than be infected by chance and not having any antibodies.

svandamme 12-11-2009 03:37 AM

whatever it is, i think it's overrated...
since the whole hoopla started, more people died from traffic accidents , then the flu managed to kill...
Folks drive through traffic everyday and think nothing of it. But this flu.. oh my god , it's a PANDEMIC !! WE'RE ALL GOING TO DIE IF WE DON'T GET SHOTS!!

media hype and the wussification of mankind. Big Pharma loves it.
The #1 cause of death? It's getting born : LD100 of .00000000000001 ms exposure to it is guaranteed to kill anything.

If there was a vaccine that for 99% guaranteed protection against traffic accidents, would you take it??;) (just messin' with ya, Stigeon)

svandamme 12-11-2009 04:11 AM

They would like to say that there is such a vaccine in the making, it's called , the car that drives itself.
It started with ABS, power steering, TC, ESP
It will end with , enter car, say where you want to be , sit down, have a coffee, work on your laptop, and then exit vehicle at destination.

But the odds don't add up anyway... they'll never be able to guaranteed 100% safety
All they will be able to do, is add zero's to the risk factor
going from
0.0000001% chance per year
to
0.000000001% chance of an accident, per year

a 100% improvement in safety, a 100% reduction in the fun department...yet still not 100% safe?
How's that for a tangible difference???

The vaccine for not getting in a traffic accident, is not getting in traffic...
lock yourself up, become a hermit...

Be my guest, but i ain't having any of either solution to a problem that isn't big enough be solved.

GH85Carrera 12-11-2009 04:32 AM

Stijin, vaccines saved the planet from Small Pox. I have a scar on my arm from that vaccine. Are you saying you would have risked Small Pox instead of a vaccine? How about Polio or the mumps.

I have yet to get my pig flu shot since I am in the low risk catagory. But I did eat a pork chop last light :)

svandamme 12-11-2009 04:46 AM

this flu ain't as bad the small pox or polio or the mumps.. not even close...
And there's to many people on the planet anyways

And moreso, would you deny your kids these vaccines?? (hypotetically, of course...)

Isn't that what homosexuality is for??

The way I see it, H1N1 is a preventable disease, so prevent it. Lots of other stuff out there you can't do anything about, but you can do something about this one...so why not.

As for math, here's my analysis:

Risk of getting H1N1 >> Risk of having a problem with the vaccination

adrian jaye 12-11-2009 05:18 AM

my wife in Canada has got it REALLY BAD, supposed to be flying out on wednseday

I have to chuckle that the NYT is the source of this info.

If you do some checking you will find that just ONE month ago they said this:

About 4,000 Americans — rather than about 1,200 — have died of swine flu since the disease emerged in April, according to new figures being calculated by epidemiologists for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

I really doubt that 6000 Americans have died in one month. Someone is "cooking" the books to guess what, make NEWS and sell newspapers!

The Gaijin 12-11-2009 06:00 AM

Apparently old folks are doing well with this flu as it is related to flus that went around decades ago.

If we never get the flu and never develop any immunities - what is going to happen when a real bad flu comes along and it spreads one step ahead of a particular vaccines availability?

Totally agree. Then you have these Moms who use hand wipes after everything they touch trying to say germ free. In the end its going to hurt them and their kids even more than they know.
