It's never easy...

Folks, this is the day I knew would eventually come and prayed I'd have the strength to weather. Every time I'd read a post from a fellow Pelican about losing a pet, I knew that someday my best buddy would leave. Barqs, our old Black/tan Cocker Spaniel died last night. He was 14 and was slow getting around these days, but his mind & spirit were bright. When we went to see a litter of pups, he "picked us" and taught us more than you can imagine while he was with us.

Two days ago he started having trouble breathing and died last night. Although my wife & I had dogs before we were married, he was our "first born" (you pet owners will understand). He was such a great little fellow, friendly to everyone, very polite but had just enough mischief in him to keep you laughing all the time. He "showed the ropes" to all of our other dogs.

It's so funny how these little guys get under your skin and become such true members of your family. He would always listen to my problems, and I will forever cherish his unconditional love. I'm not ashamed to tell you that I'm crying like a baby this morning. I know that in time my tears will turn into fond memories of the wonderful years we had with him, but right now my feet feel rather cold and alone without having him curled up by them.

Thank you Barqs, for all that you taught us. I'll miss you buddy, see you on the other side.

I'm sorry about Barqs, he looks like a great dog. Wife and I have been through it several times with our Danes and it never gets easier.

Sincerest condolences

I dread the day

my cat picked me. i was walking away from the kid with the cats in a box, when i look back and see this paw trying to escape thru the center of the box, where she had folded the box closed. that kitty, in one last ditch desparate move to go home with me!! her name is Persistance, percy for short. she has kept me going at times.

a long story, but in short, she was attacked by an owl, which clenched her in the gut. when i finally investigated, she had the claw still in her skin, but no bird of prey(she chewed the owls leg off, and walked around with the talon still in her, till she got home)

pets are amazing.

I laughed when i saw yours, looks like a lot of character there!!

Oh man that is so hard to deal with. You have everybody's deepest sympathies here.

Jack and Buddy get sandwiches tonight in his honor.

Thanks guys...I guess I just needed to vent a bit, as it's going to be a long day. Here are a few more shots of the little fellow. He was playing "knock the book off of the table" when one of our friends from England was visiting and trying to snuggle with some of the other dogs....He was also our little "aqua dog" who would get in the pool with (or without) you to swim a few laps. He also loved the ski boat, either at the bow with his ears flying in the breeze, or jumping into the lake off of the stern to swim out to Diane after she'd finish a kneeboard run.

Very hard - most of us here can relate.

My late tabby cat 'picked' me as well. In a litter of 5-6 kittens he stomped over them and came right on over saying "here I am! Lets go home already". Good times.

So sorry, Roux. But I can tell he had a good life and family that loved him.

We all know the hurt. Those of us who have pets as part of the family. The hurt is real, but I feel sorry for people who don't know that pain, because it means they've missed out on a lot of joy.

widgeon13 12-11-2009 11:16 AM

Sorry to hear this sad news. He was loved and cared for, he couldn't have asked for more and he gave it in return.

Been through it a number of times and I think it gets harder all the time.

+1. Well said.

I lost my 16 year old Jack Russell last year. It was a brutal death - seizure, lost bowel control, 108 degree fever, etc. Oh it was horrible. The hurt is still fresh in my mind.

I feel for you and understand the pain. Sorry for your loss. The tears will eventually turn to laughter. Keep your chin up and love on the others even more.

Best wishes.

I'm very sorry for your loss. Your are right though, your pain will turn into very fond memories.

Unfortunately we were faced with making the decision for our 13 year old yellow lab. Best animal I ever owned, and I fought against even having a dog. (I had enough mouths to feed on one income). Fortunately for me, my family won that battle and we all enjoyed every minute of her life. Especially me.

After cancer, a stroke, blindness, a loss of hearing and the "normal" hip problems her time had come.

Not the worst day of my life, but one of the toughest, especially with the kids.

Her picture is through-out the house, and on MY bedroom end table with all the kids on a snowy day.

Those are very fond memories. Your pain will turn into very fond memories as well.

No shame at all in feeling a very profound loss.

Godspeed, Barqs, Good luck, R.R.

I've lived with many furry and feathered companions throughout my years and they've all been such an important, central part of my life. The passing of each one over the years has always been gut wrenching for me - I get choked up thinking about each and every one of them; so I know how you miss your Barqs. :(

My condolences to you and your wife, rouxroux.
