New(?) VISA card scam?

I received an offical-sounding (automated) call the other day:

"This is a call from VISA. Due to possible fraudulent activity, your Visa Debit card has been temporarily suspended. To re-activate your card, press 1 now."

After pressing "1", the voice asks you to input your 16-digit card #. I entered 16 random digits and nothing happened.

I knew this was a scam, but am wondering how many folks don't?

The scary thing is, they called on a number I only use for banking and on-line transactions (it's a Google Voice #) and they knew I had a Visa Debit card. Leak at the bank?

I called the security department at the bank and at VISA, but they didn't seem to care too much.

Be careful out there!

These types of scams may lead to others... A friend of mine had his card "cloned". Sadly, for that to happen someone either had to have the card in hand, or direct access to his bank account info from the inside.

The scammers are becoming more creative...

I just had a card replaced. While at the movies, I got a call from my bank saying someone had tried to charge $1200 at Wal-Mart in GA minutes after I used it in IL; I've never been to Georgia. Still no idea what happened, but I've never used that particular card online.

Did you use the card at the movie theater? D-bags who can only get jobs @ movie theaters because of their criminal records can scan your card with a hand-held device and immediately send that info to someone else. They know you're going to be in the movie theater for 2hrs., which gives them plenty of time to scan/clone/shop.

Why was your cellphone on during a movie anyway? You ruined their scam...

Actually, yes, I did - for the first time in about a year and a half. And my phone was on vibrate - my job means it's pretty much never off and unanswered. Before you ask, I did leave the theater.

I was just giving you a hard time about the cellphone, but, as mentioned, I'll bet the scammers rely on the chance you are "incommunicado" while at the movies.

I accidently tried to pull money from a savings account with my debit card from a bank I only hold a checking account with- bank called me while I still had the card in the ATM to tell me about fradualent activity. Had to go to the nearest branch to get it reactivated- they definitely won't ask for the card numbers.

Anytime you don't initiate the communication in which someone asks for your card/account #, you're being scammed. I wouldn't even make it two seconds into a robocall before clicking off.
