BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (AP) — A Connecticut investment adviser is facing federal charges that he embezzled several million dollars from investors and a church in Orange.

Federal authorities said 50-year-old Gregory Loles of Easton was arrested Tuesday by the FBI on mail and wire fraud charges.

A telephone message and e-mail seeking comment were left Tuesday with his attorney, Christopher Caldwell.

Loles appeared in federal court in Bridgeport, where a judge ordered him detained pending a hearing Friday.

Loles is a parishioner at St. Barbara’s Greek Orthodox Church and served on the board of the church’s endowment fund. Authorities allege that since 2001 Loles defrauded investors, including the church, by not investing funds as he promised.

Authorities say Loles used some of the money for his car racing business.
