Bose blows and then it glows!

So, on the way home from a Christmas cookie party on Friday. The wife and I are in my 07 Vette. We go about 100ft from the house and we here a pop. I look to see if the hatch is popped, but it isnt.

Then my wife says she smells something. We pull over, pop the hood, the hatch, the doors. We look and the passenger door speaker is fully engulfed. It appears that the speaker has a capacitor, it over heated (must have shorted), and that was enough to set the speaker on fire.

So, the door is lit up nicely. We got the fire out and drove with the car home. The car is at the dealership now.

I knew the Bose sounded TERRIBLE, but now they really stink. (Literally, my car reeks of electrical fire and burnt plastic).

Has anyone else heard of this? I couldn't find anything on Corvette forums, or on google.

I don't have pictures, (it happened at night, and the car was dropped off first thing in the morning on Saturday).

For the record, the Bose system sounds worse than the system I had in my first car 20 years ago. I cannot FATHOM why people like bose.

Bose has mastered the art of modern snake oil sales - you don't need a good product, just good marketing. I'm always amazed at how many people think Bose is best. I'll probably get banned for this, but I feel the same way about Blaupunkt. Well, at least their speakers.

Flame suit on.

Heard this somewhere "No highs or lows, must be Bose".:D

A moment of silence for a fine speaker. Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

I worked in an electronics store and this was the general consensus amongst the staff. Bose was still the number one seller.

+1

I'm not a Bose fan at all. What I did note about the headphones ( among other products) was that the ads never had prices on them. I think that was a way to promote exclusivity, sort of like saying if you have to ask, you can't afford them. I don't like that arrogance and so I've never purchased their products.

Bose makes crap these days. Beyond bad.

My mother has a new "high-end" Bose DVD/home entertainment system. Sounds like the drive-thru speaker at McDonalds.

Well that sucks!

I guess I'm getting old because the Bose system in '08 Silverado sounds good enough that I don't have the desire to put a bunch of money in my stereo like I did with my last truck.

Here I thought it was just me, at least I got mine through the pawn shop. I tried to reconcile it by saying it sounded good for its size untill I ended up with one of the Bosch job-site radio-power supplys.

Or Corvettes...

They make good noise-canceling headphones, that's about it.

Bose has always made crap. It's just good marketing. The drivers used in the much loved 901's were cheap. Very, very cheap. It's all about sizzle.

I bought my JBL L-112's (speakers) in the 80's and have not found anything to match them, my friend brought over his "super bose 901's" and I blew him out of the water."how could that be, I paid more than you did!" Cost isn't everything, I do like there noise canceling headsets.

BlueSkyJaunte 12-14-2009 06:19 PM

Bose and Monster Cable are a perfect match for each other.

I went to the local napa to there audio guy and he sold me a set of boss audio speakers and they rock!!! they blew any previous speaker i've ever had out of the water. And they were one of the cheapest speakers there but they beat out my old sony's , blaupunkt etc. They hit hard and they are crisp and clear all while being super cheap. They make the other speakers sound like it's mushmouth singing.

I know grammar isn't really your thing, but this thread is about BosE audio speakers, not BosS audio.

Well smart ass I'm talking about BOSS audio I know the difference between the two and I was confirming the fact that money doesn't egual a good speaker.

Well, I have the Super Duper Bose System in my 2005 C4S 996. Piece of crap.Stays off most of the time.

Why did Porsche hook up with these guys, I'llnever know.......

Subjective. I have several Bose items including the premium audio package in my Mercedes (which is made by Bose), the noise canceling headphones (QC3), the noise canceling headphones for flying (Aviation-X) and a wave radio. I find all to be excellent products. Never had a problem or issue with any of them and they all work superbly. I neither need nor want enough bass to shake my fillings out, but they can deliver plenty. The operative word is "fidelity", not "shift the audio spectrum of a given song about 6000 Hz to the left then blast it at loud volume", which seems to be what people want these days.

I have several assorted Blaupunkt systems too and those have given mixed results from crap to fantastic. My wife's car has JBL. So far so good. Boring for the most part, but can be forced to sound good at louder volumes if you fiddle with the equalizer settings.

About every six months someone will start one of these Bose bashing threads and I just shake my head... If you don't like it, don't buy it. I think they're fine - certainly better than 90% of the other Chinese-made garbage on the audio market these days.

I'm very happy with the Bose system in my 2010 MazdaSpeed3, but then I'm a drummer and my ears are shot, which may explain that!
