Norton PC security vs. ?

I just purchased a new laptop and it came loaded with a 30 day trial version of Norton security software. I know past forum questions regarding Norton most people said it was a memory hog and not that great. On my previous laptop I used Avira and AD-AWARE which are free downloads. This industry changes quickly so what's the latest on internet security ? The first thing I did when I got the computer was to download Firefox. I have not uninstalled Explorer yet but probably will to free up some space. So what do you guys suggest ?

I've been using Trend Micro for a few years. It seems to work well, and a few years ago was the top of all of the computer magazine AV lists. Last year I paid $29 for a 3 PC license/download of Trend Micro, so for $30 I was able to install Trend Micro on 3 PCs.

I wouldn't bother uninstalling MSIE. If it's a new laptop then you've probably got more space than you can quickly use. Uninstalling MSIE for space would be like taking a pebble out of a bucket of sand for space.

Don't remove IE - eventually you will need it as some sites do not support any other browser.

For AV, I use Avira (which comes with annoying pop-ups) and AVG.

Avira works well but the fact that I have to make a registry edit to eliminate their pop-up advertising makes me usually recommend AVG Free.

Looks like Norton 2009 + 2010 are rated quite highly.

I wouldn't remove IE either. Just remove the icons and don't use it.

I use AVG from grisoft. Very happy with it.

AVG for viruses, CCleaner for some spam stuff, and Google popup blocker.

I've used ADAWARE in the past as well.

Malware bytes is a great free program too.

ESET - Antivirus Software with Spyware and Malware Protection or NOD32. best out there by far..

My reccomendation is AVG Free for anti-virus, Use the latest Firefox for your browser with the Ad Block plus extension.

Malwarebytes is the best for adware/malware removal.

I have been running AVG free for years and it is very good. However, I would highly recommend you download Malware byes also. My granddaughter and SIL both running AVG picked up some scareware and Malware bytes seemed to be the only thing that would really remove it.

That is not normal. Been using AVG for many years on dozens of people's computers. Never seen a slowdown except while doing a complete scan.

Every puter i've seen AVG installed on has slowed down to one degree or another. My home PC gets like a snail with it installed, i cannot use it, it's worse than a virus.

I use Norton Internet Security and have never had a problem.

However, I previously tried Norton 360 and it absolutely sucked. Besides taking forever to boot up, it comes with a backup system that is totally too small and then hounds you to subscribe for more space - for additional cost. After numerous norton spams, I deleted the program and bought Internet Security - which I had used in the past. It's basic antivirus protection and seems to do the job.

+1! I've been very happy with NOD32. Norton and McAfee products: not so much.
