Stress Leave

Explain work-related stress leave to me.

What is it? Have you taken it or know anyone who has? And what was the outcome?

Knew some that did - They went to a Psych/Doc, told their story and Doc wrote orders putting them on leave.......Under our plan, they had 6 mos to return to work, retire on a disablilty or resign......They could not return to work w/o a Doctor release declaring them "fit for duty"

Do you know anyone who's seriously taken a vacation (in the conventional sense) in the last year? I certainly don't.

I'm accumulating vacation time now with absolutely no intention of ever using it. The way I see it, one needs to bank as much as possible (in case of layoff, it'll become part of your buyout) and anything else over what you're allowed to bank should be taken as a cash payout at the end of the year and socked away just in case.

The money is worth a hell of a lot more than the time off right now. I'll deal with the extra stress. Big deal. Compared to the stress of joblessness, it's a pittance. Most people I talk to are doing similar things. A lot of people are going to be in the office between xmas & newyears, which is (from what I'm told) a pretty radical change in the culture of this particular place (in years past I guess it used to be a ghost town as people took the time off - no longer).

dd74 stress leave, is your question regarding a workman's comp claim through the state?

If so the stress must be completely related to your job.
If you have a medical history of any non work related stress issues, relationship, financial or previous documented health issues this can make it difficult for the state to rule in your favor. They may view your stress as accumilative and not entirely work related.

Most employeers will fight your claim and provide info to the state defending their workplace.

ex. you take a month off work, file a claim.
Claim may take 6 months or more for the state to review.
There is no state compensation while you wait the outcome of your claim.
If it is not approved your time off work and medical expenses comes out of your pocket.
It helps to have a Dr that is familiar and willing to correctly complete his share of the workman's comp paper work.
Understandable the state will reject incomplete claims.

If it is approved in addition to the reduced state compensation your stress related medical expenses will be paid at that time by the state.
If approved compensation max for single person was (tax free?) 2/3 and for married 3/4 your normal salary.

I knew a few air traffic controllers that suffered PTSD.

It is said that one in 5 people have a mental health problem that may or may not be diagnosed. (Except for everyone here. We are all sane, aren't we?)
Divorce, family problems, workload etc....
For most people who are truly stressed a vacation isn't enough time for a reset.
Most of us can go for a very long time without any serious problems, but when you compound personal problems with work stresses and a poor economy and add in a foreclosure at the same time, that would make for many sleepless nights.
There are always those that take advantage of every loop hole.....

Well, you just started working there a month or so ago, so it would be fairly bizarre for you to be planning a vacation anytime soon, wouldn't it? Give it a year, you'll feel differently.

I can only carry over five days per calendar year and cannot use up what I have left for 2009. When you work on commission and are below in your numbers (everyone in our company is), it not only looks bad to take time off, it cuts into the paychecks. I'm forfeiting five days and can't get paid for it. It was partly due to my remaining balance being innacurate in my online paycheck because I hadn't installed Java on my computer. Didn't catch that until early last week.

I've used 5 1/2 weeks so far this year and I'm on vacation next week.

a lady in my office does this at least once a year (public agency) for a week or two. usually right around the time schools are out for spring break or another in school year vacation week. i suspect it is for spending quality time with her school age daughter. i always joke how i need to find out who her doctor is and get some. actually quite common in the agency i work for. good note from the doc if you can get it....

I was one of the FIRST EVER TO TAKE A STRESS LEAVE back in 1979...I was careful not to put it on the company...but you still collect SDI....and I did it again for a fullyear in 1989-1990...and I cleaned out my SDI account.

One might say that is the advantage of knowing someone in the field..
