Do criminals think they will never get caught??

I just have to wonder if people who lead a life of crime really believe that they will never get caught, or is it just worth the risk, and they are willing to accept the consequences.
In the last 4 years in this area, there have been some pretty decent size crime rings broken up. I have personally known a few of these guys. Two of them were local buisnessmen , who were fairly well known in the area, and did pretty well without their little "side buisnesses. One of them was my first landlord ( buisness property) Our shops were adjoining, and I had always suspected something fishy was going on. He always had brand spanking new Corvette's, and Dually's that he would dissassemble and change colors .interiors etc. I had asked him about them a couple of times , and he bull****ted me telling me that they were theft recovery's,or flood vehicles etc.. I rented from him for 5 years , and shortly before I left there, he did confide in me that he was stealing these cars right off the lot, changing numbers , and selling them.
I asked if he was f'n nuts or what. He seemed like a pretty decent guy, loving familly man, had a thriving buisness etc. I wanted to know if he realized how much time he would get if caught, and that getting caught was very probable because all of these " stolen cars" were all at some time titled in his name. He seemed real non chalant, in his answer ,like he was not worried about it
Well , he is now serving 5 -15 years in prison, and they seized his home and buisness. for operating a chop shop.
And this moring I hear , that another local buisness was raided , and they found large ammounts of cocaine, guns, cash, stolen motorcyles, and all kinds of good stuff. Plus, they siezed the buisnesses security tapes, and have all of the players in action.. I know a couple of these guys as well, I have done legal buisness with them, and they seemed to have their act together. Why risk it?
There is no ammount of money that I would be willing to do time for, especiallly now that I have family

It depends on the kind of criminal.

On the most basic level, you have crimes of opportunity. People who see a dangly purse or an unlocked car. They aren't thinking about consequences.

A level above that, you have organized crime. That doesn't necessarily mean the Mafia, it means that crimes are given forethought and are coordinated. This can take a variety of forms, but most people at this level take some countermeasures and have an awareness of what will get them caught and what won't.

At the top, you have the criminal masterminds. These are your Dahmers, Madoffs and Congressmen. These people either have so much control of the system they manipulate they believe they are above the law, or want desperately to be caught for the recognition.

My sisters husband was a drug kingpin with a very profitable auto dealership as a 'cover' business. I asked him many times why he didn't stop. He never gave me an answer worth listening to. I suspect it's because he was just a criminal at heart.

He's dead now. Just died after 10 years in lockup. First he went nuts.

FastFred, how it is that you're not concerned that this guy might think you turned him in? He knows you knew.

as im enduring "the wall" drama the last 24 hours you have to really take a good hard look at dysfunctional behavior. i have experienced it twice now with loved ones, so ya kind of become an expert and not really wanting to be.

when you compound that in your life and then go back to finish your degrees in biz mgmt and pysch, you really get an understanding and eyefull of what dysfunctional behavior is all about. taking dysfunctional pysch will open yer eyes like no monyana.

1st and foremost they will continue with bad behavior until they hit rock bottom. name the behavior and thats a fact. some peoples rock bottom is different from you and me. same as threshold of pain levels.

some are into mega pain before they change behaviors.

my neighbor is IN TO MEGA PAIN! and he will SUFFER accordingly with ANY more poor behavior.

DO ARIZONA-DO TIME!

its so much easier being a law abiding citizen.

Some people become institutionalized and can't function outside the system.

(I know, not the type you are describing)

An acquaintance relative is a drug addict... constantly in and out of jail...

What kills me is EVERY time he gets out someone sets him up with a great job and he scores a hot girlfriend... he then gets back into drugs... gets into some stupid scheme to fund his addiction... and ends back up in the can.

Like you I cant imagine risking living in a cell... and showering with a bunch of guys who at some point might want to get up close and personal.
