has anyone ever successfully grown an avacado tree from the pit?

every kid has tried. and i have tried twice as an adult. you know the drill. 4 toothpicks, a tiny bowl of water = free, rich and creamy avocados for life. i have never succeeded or have i ever seen one sprout.

anyone here?

I have them sprout sitting in my yard all the time.

Never tried the toothpick thing.

My Mom got several avocados trees started that way it works! I don't know the secret though.

3 Tooth picks and a clear glass bowl small (custard dish) thats all I know.

We did. Grew to about 5 feet tall. One long spindly stick with a few sparse leaves. No sign of fruit. Threw it out a few weeks ago.

Sure you can grow a tree like that but they don't produce well. All good Avos are spliced.

Sorry, It should have been Grafted, like TABs said.

I think my mom did that for me when I was about 5 and we lived in an apt. It never got to be a tree, but then we were in an apt and I was so little that it didn't matter that much to me.

Avacado trees to produce need to be GRAFTED...

The Hass Avacado came from ONE TREE....BTW those are the ones you see in the supermarket. and are the best.

Cliff, I have one that I started from a pit about four or five years ago. Started it in a glass of water with the tooth pick suspension. Its in a pot outside and is about a foot and a half tall. Mind you, I have not been very kind to it. I water it when I think of it. It has almost died a few times but it always comes back. Its probably root bound and needs a bigger pot. Do you want it? Its yours if you do.

I tried the toothpick thing last spring. I got nothin' to show for it. Interweb says the trees never really produce good fruit, if that's an ultimate goal.

I did get some seedlings from apples, though.

Back in the early 70's you were cutting edge if you had them on your menu. I must have sprouted dozens on the window sills of various restaurants in Vermont.

three toothpicks and a rocks glass.

Brings back memories.
