AR Sights and Magazines. Options? Opinions?

So I have my BB AR from CMMG. Those don't come with rear sights or magazines. I've been poking around for rear sight options. I hear and see a lot about the heads up type and lasers. But I think it would be best to be proficient with a standard setup. Then have the bells and whistles to add later. My thinking is if the zombies come, I may not have access to batteries and other needed supplies as easily. Besides, I'm more of an old school kind of guy anyway.

And magazines? What kind, where, how much, how many? I should just go visit Rick or Charlie. Yeah, that's the ticket!

You have a flat top?

If you do, a standard A2 style sight on a carrying handle will be fine if you just want iron sights. If that's what you go with, strongly consider adding a set of trijicon tritium night sights. The complete set is about $75.00, and gives round the clock targetting capabilities.

You know....for zombies.

If you do go with a red dot, there are a ton of them on the market that are quite serviceable for under $100.00

There are several existing threads with a variety of brand names and models. If you get anything with "Aimpoint", "EOtech" or "Trijicon" on the side you are paying a big "tactical tax" as well as buying a product that has capabilities a civilian will just never need....like night vision compatibility, for instance.

Tasco, Bushnell, Redfield, Walther etc, etc, etc all make perfectly serviceable red dots in the $100 range.

$85 for a YHM quick deploy iron rear sight or spend more and get an ARMS or Daniel Defense or Troy or Larue. But the YHM is good for the money.

PMags by Magpul are great mags for about $14 each. We recently discussed sights and mags in a tread by another BB rifle purchaser.

If you want a good reddot for less than $100, get a Primary Arms M3-ish multi-reticle. I have two and they are rock solid. You can get outfitted with a mount for about $100. No need to spend big bucks on a mount. Marshall (Primary Arms owner) is great to work with and buying from him is as hassle free as I've ever encountered. He usually ships the same day on instock items if you submi an order before noon.

MBUSŪ - MagpulŪ Back-Up Sight

Anybody seen/use these? I would think they are good with Magpuls name.
I have Troy's with HK style front sight and like them a lot, but they are a little expensive. Need another set and would rather not spend the almost 300 for the Troys.

I have a set of the Mbus. I'll sell them to you if you want them. I'll then spend some more money to buy irons.

I have YHM on my ARs that have BUIS. I can use irons on a rifle if I have to but I try to avoid it.

I swear by Magpul PMags.

I must have a backpack full of magazines, some have the green follower but I've not had any feed failures with the others. I prefer the 20 to the 30 but probably have about as many of each. Happy I got them when they were $3 but does one really need more than a a half dozen? Ammo on stripper clips goes in pretty fast, gives the barrel time to cool. I like the old school sights myself, no batteries required.

By the way, this is the hottest anti-zombie ammo in 5.56mm on the civvie market:

DoubleTap Ammunition

It's a ballistic twin to the US SOCOM Mk262 Mod 1 round. This is the stuff that was fielded by SOCOM after all the stopping power issues with M855 ammo in combat operations. It is very nasty fragmentation type stuff. Stability issues may manifest themselves in 1:9 twist barrels, so make sure you test it in your barrel, don't just assume it will work. It does work fine in my 1:9 barrel and shoots perfectly respectable sub .6" groups at 25m using the close range iron sight aperature from my 1:9 16" carbine (even at temps in the high 40's F.) That is way more than enough accuracy for any self defense scenario. It would shoot even tighter groups with optics or the long range iron sight aperature.

Double Tap makes HOT ammo in a wide variety of calibers.

Federal American Eagle XM193 is also very good, will work in any barrel, is about as good a close range armor penetrator as you'll find, and violently fragments 85% of the time.

I have never had any problems with any good condition MILSPEC GI type mags in an M-16A2 or newer model of AR.

I was at SHOT on Tues. and there was just too much to take in. I looked for the AR sights at the Trijicon booth, but didn't see any and all their reps. were pretty busy. If I get a set of them, do I have to replace my gas block?

Don, you gotta see my new AR build. Let's go sight ours in together when we get the sights on.

The Trijicon sights go into your existing sight aparatus. It's just a front post and rear aperature.

I had never fully disassembled an A2 rear sight assy. before i installed mine, but i didn't have any problems. It was pretty straightforward.

You should be able to get a set for about $75.00

They have been out a while, so maybe they didn't want to take up the limited booth space with "old" tech. products at SHOT? Anyhow, no need to remove FSB. Meproplight also makes a set if you prefer a more traditional "pin" front post (as opposed to the "blade" type of the trijicons):

Trijicon CP25 M4 Night Sights

MeproLight 31618 AR Night Sights

I considered that, but went with this instead. Much more solid:

Oh, and as for mags, get yourself a stack of the stamped $10 ones. They work just fine.

I also have some 10-round mags (I prefer them for long-distance target shooting as they don't interfere with the bipod on my full-length AR) and some fancy MagPul ones with a fitted cover. I found that I had to shave down the corners on the 10-round mags to fit into my Bushmaster.

I've been considering moving to .308 for anti-zombie duty. That new Kel-Tec RFB has really piqued my interest.

The latest 5.56mm stuff is really good wrt terminal ballistics. Good to the point it has surpassed every military loading of 7.62 NATO that i am aware of.

I only use genuine Colt mags for mt Colt AR15, I reload my own ammo for it and I'm shopping for an EOTech 516f, although there are lower cost units out there, I've used the EOTech on a friend's rifle and I really liked it.

Got you beat Bill, 14 20's, 17 30's, and an odd 10; an even 800 to your 630 rds (my mag/gun ratio suffers though).
