BMW K1...gotta have one!

I remember when these came out and I thought it was the ugliest thing I've ever laid eyes on. Now, I gotta have one (or two...one Red, one Blue). Anyone have one now/previously?

as for the K1,

they are not famous for any mechanical vices. the handing is typical early K bike "flying brick". they are just ugly and unloved. i hink designed on a napkin at studio 54.they're on ebay from time to time for not very much money.

if you can open your heart and adopt one of these special needs bikes i applaud you. screw what everybody else says.

Unfortunately, they seem to go for more than typical bikes in the same year range (of the few I've been watching on E-Bay & Walnecks).

I seem to have an attraction to "ugly ducklings"...

One of the first bikes to have been styled in the windtunnel. That's about all I know about them.

How much do clean K1s go for, anyway?

This one isn't going for much as he's had no offers, but you just don't see many for sale:

BMW : K-Series:eBay Motors (item 230411665380 end time Dec-19-09 15:13:21 PST)

There are two on Walneck's between $5k & $8k.

Checking Cycle Trader next...

A neat bike, for certain. Fairly rare, too. Even at places like the Rock Store I don't think I've seen a K1 more than once or twice, though I'm admittedly not a two-wheeled regular there. I could see paying $5-8K for one, I suppose. But I'm a Ducati guy, and you could get a rarer and more racing history laden 851/888 for the same chunk of change. If you have a Paso, you know the allure of that rumbling L-twin and trellis frame.

did a quick search around. the plastic had a tendency to crack. and all that streamlining vented engine heat directly at the rider. plus it had the typicla BMW problem of being way overpriced to begin with.

i see them for sale all the time. maybe it's just the same couple changing hands again and again. many are low mile garage queens. considering that a garden variety K100 is going for three thousand, interesting that these can be had for five or less.

friend in school had a K100RT. beautiful bike in it's day

Almost...have two of these. Very rare, sorta-ugly, can't give 'em away even with a full tank of gas:

Was the "Sport" the lower spec sport bike? Still a beautiful machine. 1989?

My wife would kill me if I brought even one (let alone two) home. Hmm. Maybe I can store them in the office at work... Office decor. They'll be tax deductible, too!

1993 (one year only). 450 imported to US. Considered "lower end" (built on the Paso chassis), but had more HP than the SuperSport.

Parts are so hard to find (including tires), I'm thinking about parting them out. Unfortunately, I have a very small market.

The only K1 I've seen goes to the Potosi rally, with a matching sidecar.

901 - A good friend of mine bought that same bike new and I rode many, many miles with him. He passed away 2 years ago and the bike still looked like new. I think his wife sold it for about 8 or 9K.

Once, it stopped dead in it's tracks in Canada (BC) and he was sitting beside for the road with it for 7 hrs, until one of us could ride home and come back with a Harley Hauler. Problem was a line came disconnected from the fuel pump which is inside the fuel tank.....

I rode the thing a time or two - Fun bike, not real fast, but great in the mountains....Don't expect to put much in those 2 rear "boxes"....
