how to accept a credit card from someone?

Anyone know of a program/way, besides payPal, that you can accept a CC from someone?

i.e. i want to sell something but want to be able to accept CC's for payment..

pay pay has this fairly tied up

Without a merchant account and or website it is hard to do (the monthly merchant fees and % / fee for transaction) and meant to be set up for "on going transactions"

I have a connection to set up restaurants (also other biz) to be able to process all cards . but a merchant bank account is needed.

I accept CC on my web site . ... don't know if it is a DEAL or not but for a fellow Pelican I will be a middle man for NO additional fees other than my transaction charge ... my web is serviced by paypal (if this is a one time deal)

Processing CC's requires a merchant account.

I suggest that if the buyer wants it bad enough, they will find a way go give you cash or an acceptable method of payment besides a credit card.

Thanks. I went ahead and researched PayPal some more and it looks like you only need a merchant account if you earn/sell more than $3000.00 a month, which I'm sure I wont, and so it's just the basic 2.9% up to $3K fee with no other fees at all. They have a 'website payment standard' program that lets you add their button to your website to collect the monies, so that should work. I will have to tweak it a bit though, as usually most people give me the card number over the phone and the prices change based upon what they want, so I have to investigate that further as well. (selling website hosting / developing services, not hard products per say, so the price varies)

I was planning on using the basic "personal 'request money' link", but I think the buyer has to have a paypal account, or sign up for one, at the time of purchase and some people don't want to do that.

Am I reading that right?

I can see wanting CC's for hosting since it's typically a recurring monthly charge.

For the development part I think I'd prefer standard payment terms, portion up front before work starts and they don't get the finished product till final payment is made.

Problem with CC's is they are easy to dispute/reverse and we've all had those clients that will try every trick in the book to get free work.

yes i agree, that's basically the way ive been doing it, but i usually get 2 years from them up front. and i'm talking peanuts here for the hosting, (but every little bit helps, right!) and if they dont pay, the site comes down!

Thats how I use PayPal on my site.

Just a single Pay Now button ..

I have too many options and special requests ... so always ask for a call, email, PM before making the payment.

Paypal / and their credit card have a note section and I usually ask for a "nickname" or a brief description on the note section.

Has worked well for me .. never an issue. and it almost forces a bit mor interaction and not just a "buy It" I like tat as I pride myself on service and being sure ALL is correct. I can offer advice / upgrades / or will often do a package deal.
It also separates ME from taking the CC # and other info

on Paypal they have that funds holding thing if you sell something of higher value and you are a limited user.

In certain instances paypal will hold payment of funds for up to 21 days or 3 days after positive feedback from buyer.

Just found out the hard way I sold my old Blackberry the other day. $249.00 and it's held.
