SF Pelicanites - Rejoice
What's the old adage, late but worth the wait? 1st bridge shipment leaves before the end of the year.

Bridge for SF made in China? We are truly dead as an economy.

Might be more than dead anyway.
A bridge made in China from recycled steel. When was the last time you had anything "Made in China" that was not throwaway, cheap junk. Am sooooooo glad I do not commute on that road anymore. My bet is that the rest of the 1930-ish structure long outlives the 'new' part, made in China. Do I remember the original bid and award now having gone 11 times over budget? Not 11 occaisions, but 11x original bid? It's what we have succumbed to as a country. |

Get used to it. Pretty much all large steel bridges will be coming out of ZPMC in China or IHI in Japan from now on.

I think your reply says it all.
I'm glad I will never 'get used to it'. |

Nah - you misunderstood me. I meant that outsourcing/offshoring is now the norm, not the anomaly.
The new Carquinez bridge was done in Japan. The Straight of Messina Bridge (think longest suspension span in the world) is currently being built in Japan, the Hardanger (largest suspension in Norway) is getting started at the same facility as the SFOBB in China, and the upcoming Tagus Third Crossing (Lisbon, Portugal) will most likely be built there too. BTW, regarding quality: take everything you hear with a grain of salt.

Serge, didn't mean anything personal.... I lived and worked in Mainland China for 2 years. I know that they do whatever it takes to make it pass. Quality is what is left after a couple of years of use. The things I saw being made there (airplanes, cars, electronics, buildings) didn't impress at all, and the record of the big stuff there does not bode well for their future.
I am sad to see us selling our infrastructure out for lowest bid to our national largest creditor, another catastrophe in progress. Will go down in history as the biggest military defeat without a shot ever being fired. |

fpilot...i hear you loud and clear. i believe (may be speaking out of place) that my friend judi and serge are there to assure the parts are built to spec.
i am not sure that there is a facility in the US that can handle parts this big? honestly i dont know why it went overseas.
