Santa Fe in April
Got any advice, anyone? I'm looking for a few days of r&r, thinking of Santa Fe, can anyone steer me towards nice, but not overly expensive accommodations, good dining, and places to explore in the daytime, probably spend maybe 5 or 6 days?
Thanx in advance ![]()

i would think that the not overly expensive accommodations will be outside of santa fe and you can explore between them and santa fe.
i wish i were going. maybe here? Santa Fe Bed and Breakfast |

I'll start with food
![]() The Shed just off the square, Blue Corn Cafe Cafe Pasquale Visit Bandolier National park outside of town Indian ruins etc. We've rented a small (very) apt the last time we were there. Recently found one for about $100 a day at "vacation by owner" VBRO web site. Jay

Lots of good food. Coyote Cafe of course if you're serious. Lots of faux/mexican/fusion stuff in the old town. The Georgia O'Keefe Gallery/Museum is a must see. And it's a great place just to walk around the galleries and shops with a mickey of Blue Agave.

Its an expensive place to go. Lots of fake people trying to act famous.
We used to have to go there to fly the a$$ Gov Richardson and could not wait to get out of the place. If I never go back will be a better person...

La Fonda is a nice old hotel, centrally located, and rooms shouldn't be much more than $100 a night at that time of year. Was, if I'm not mistaken, where the Soviet agents were handed the Los Alamos secrets, and where most of the Atomic Scientists stayed when coming in and out of town. Speaking of which - head up to Los Alamos - great museum near the lab, with Einstein's original letter to Roosevelt. Beautiful place and beautiful drive to get up to the mesa.
If you ski and go in early April, Taos will probably be open. Nice little restaurants in Taos the town - a good number of miles from the ski resort - and a great drive to get there, though other than a bite to eat not much to do there. O'Keefe gallery is nice. Bandolier is nice too if you like to hike. Never had a bad meal in Santa Fe - Fancy places like The Compound or Coyote Cafe are great, but so were the cheaper places - even had good meals at Japanese and French places there. Just be ready to answer red or green (sauce) and you'll be fine. My kids were happy to finally see food hot enough to impress me....LOL. South of town you can find places to rent horses for trail rides in the foothills and see the snow covered mountains in the distance. A lot more touristy in the center than you'd think, but a very nice place. Last edited by RKC; 02-17-2010 at 07:50 AM.. |

Have been there midwinter on business. First time there was ice all over that little airport (and puddle jumper plane) and the second time drove up from Albuquerque in the snow (I-40 was closed that day..)
Nice in the off season. Seret & Sons is pretty cool: Seret & Sons | Rugs & Textiles - Fine Furnishings - Architecutral Elements That guy has stories of Afghanistan before the Soviets and craziness started. |

I was checking out the official website, the CoC shows it to be 65 average high for April.

Grew up in Albuquerque (where RT 66 was) and spent a LOT of time in SF (relatives and friends).
Almost never gets really hot there, it's over 7,000 ft elevation. April will have highs in the 50s, low 60's. It will be freezing or below at night. It's usually cooler than Denver. I like Santa Fe. High desert, foothills pinon trees. SF ski area is 30 minutes away and may still be open. Joe's view is probably skewed by his clientelle and their friends (Richardson). Those people are not that numerous, really. |

Then there is Richardson... and the slugs that hang around him. I did not take any photo's of the plane after he left but suffice to say that you could tell exactly where he was sitting from the food slopped around and dropped everywhere. The boy is a pig in his manners once the television cameras stop rolling.
