Now for a funny (to me) pet story...The uber-Rott car security dog

As some of you know from my previous post, my stepson purchased a beautiful Rottweiler puppy...now 14 weeks old and a lovable, sweet and HUGE lunk of a puppy. Paws the size of a grown man's fist. Yesterday, stepson wanted to go duck/geese hunting up in the Delta. I volunteered to babysit "Jax" (short for "Ajax").

So...I decide to pack up Jax in my 525 and take him to the park to strut his stuff, socialize him to other dogs and people, etc. On the way I decide to get some gas. I get out of the car and begin to pump gas. Jax, who heretofor has been dozing on the passenger seat gets up to see what's going on. He is interested in something on the driver's side, so he lumbers over taking a step on the console. Where the emergency flasher and central door look buttons are located.

Yup...you guessed it. ***CLICK*** Jax has locked the doors. My key is in the ignition.

No problem. Thankfully the car is not running and I have a valet key in my wallet. Yup. There it is. On the friggin' console where I laid it when I pulled out my debit card. OOOPS.

Jax is sitting in the car grinning like he knows exactly what he's done. He's in the driver's seat now. I go to the pasenger side and call him over. He obliges and being the brilliant animal he is decides to turn on the emergency flashers.

So I go to the passenger side to coax him over the console to once again get him to step on the lock button. Instead he turns off the emergency flashers. Back to the driver's side and Jax turns the flashers back on. I swear he knows exactly what he's doing.

A small bemused crowd gathers. Jax, being the shy sort and just an easily tired puppy, decides its time to take a nap. For the next 15 minutes we (by this time the audience participation mode has kicked in) try everything to get this pup to stir. Nada. Snoring can be heard. He's out like a light. Even call my stepson and put my phone on speaker so he can try to wake him up from a duck blind. Dead to the world.

I surrender and call the pop-a-lock guys. They're 45 minutes away. While we're waiting, Jax awakens from his afternoon nap and looks around. We resume the one side to the other game. As I'm rounding the front of the car...MIRACLE!!!!!! Jax hits the unlock button. Just as my hand touches the door...this hound locks it back. Grins goofily and decides to take another nap.

The pop-a-lock guy shows up and procedes to give me a spiel about how hard Mercedes and BMW's are to open...how some guys won't even attempt it....how its normaly $150 on Sundays but since he's charitable Baptist minister he's only gonna charge me $60.....these cars come with a valet key you should carry in your wallet....yadadada. I look at him and say, "I know you can open this door in under 30 seconds. I've paid you. You don't have to give me the song and dance. Its cheaper than me breaking out a window. OPEN THE DAMN CAR DOOR!!!!"

Thirteen seconds later I'm in my car. Jax is still napping.

You expect a $2000 dog would be able to unlock the doors, too.

I'm thinkin', you were thinkin', Ahh sh****t,... that's where the fun begins. :>)

Funny how the guys that can open the cars 'right away' have to remind you how good they are, and what a break your getting.

I can imagine the audience was having a pretty good time as well.

Funny story, thanks for sharing!

Pretty damn funny.
The 'back and forth' tactic was smart.

I am very experienced at locking my keys in a car or car trunk, but it was always my own stupidity. Great dog story.

He'll probably cost you less in the long haul than the stepson...
