Oh & for planning travel stuff, this is the website of all websites for Turkey:

Turkey Travel Planner

It's a commercial site & you can certainly book elsewhere but he seems to have all the info.

Have done it several times and frankly I would not do it again. As well there is not enough money in the world to get me to drive at night in Turkey. I love Turkey and its people but leave the driving to someone else.

If you are silly enough to try this, please get the "Medivac insurance" that will bring you back to either Europe or N.America for medical treatment should something happen. I spent years picking up accident victims in that part of the world and medical treatment there can be difficult.

Good Luck!

Well, if you're still going...be sure to contact Evren. Local knowledge is a valuable thing. If only the waters of the Bosphorus could talk...the history of mankind that happened there...wow!

I emailed Evren this morning & I might lean on him for restaurants recommendations etc. I will try to get together with him in Istanbul.

If it comes off, be sure to give my old car a pat on a fender for me...:)

Did you check out the Hotel Nena website? In the Sultanahmet area.
We experienced unbelievably good food within walking distance, including a fantastic patissier.

Yes, I did. Thanks. And I bookmarked it. At 120€ per night, it is also well within budget.

4. Keep lots of Turkish Lira for roadside cop payola.

Did I forget anything?

Ian

Yes - check your money carefully - a store tried to give me very nice color copies of large denomination Lira - I caught it.
2 ladies from Denmark in front of me in line at Topkapi Palace were not so fortunate - they told me they had been given the bills by a taxi driver the night before.

I know this type of thing is done all over but I had never seen it in any of the 50+ countries I have visited, yet saw it twice in Istanbul
