Truly an incredible aircraft. Beautiful.

I can't imagine trying to keep it in the air.

+1 on the fabrication, mechanics, and machinists

also i would buy a LANDBASED plane as INTERGRANULAR CORROSION will NOT BE AS MUCH OF AN ISSUE!

P-51's would be a good start, if ya have to have a real mccoy fighter. we have a real one based here that actually is in WWII D-DAY markings and was built in feb. of 1944. i think it got 12 kills on the fuselage. hes on his 3rd engine. last engine built by hendrick motorsports. anythang RARE model(low production #'s) will be the downfall of your marriage/bank accts/your health.

in other words if yer not bill gates......................you havent a CLUE how many pesos you will be pooing out yer arse!

like i said..............if ya get 20 hrs of flyboy time per year ..........i'll be AMAZED.

my old boss, jim keeshan, had an SBD Dauntless sitting in a warehouse in van nuys. he bought it hoping to get her flying. but the main spar was rotten. aluminum does not age well.

Only $2,145,000. One of a half dozen or so for sale on controller.com. Probably cheap by F4U standards...

trust me........im your amigo.............i werk at a private uber snooty aeropuerto.........i see this day after day/month after month/year after year............for years now.

just start with the hanger width and height 50x 60 or 60 x60 and how much thats gonna cost. if here in the dezert yer gonna need to cool it in the summer and if yer in a cold clime yer gonna have to keep it warm and dry and RODENT FREE!

we forgot FUEL! and guess how much avgas is for a fire breathing 12 cylinder pratt and whitney????????? oh boy!

i think you would be better off going down a different nostalgic blvd............buy a 80ft PT BOAT and while yer working on it for years you will have 80 feet of party barge to entertain your friends on summer and winter while working on (3) packard 12 cylinder engines.

your chances of getting LAID are dramatically higher than the cockpit of WWII fighter!

plus you can go fishing/scuba diving/water skiing/"3 hour tours"/ wakeboarding/etc.

my step dad was confederate air force. i used to listen to those old guys talking. their theory was to prefer early numbered planes. those were built by craftsmen with care. later ones were slapped together with the expectancy that they would be used up after two months in theatre.

Nice to have an amigo.

I like the PT Boat idea. Or at least the party barge idea. :>) Problem is, here in Colorado the opportunity to float an 80' boat is slim. Or for me to afford it.

About the same as an opportunity (for me) to listen, look or ride in a Corsair.

Even after 27 years, I have to agree the opportunity to get LAID is better than a ride in either a P-51D or a Corsair.

I did get the chance to ride and fly a T-6 though. :>) NOT PIC

yes NOW is a good time to buy anything if ya got the cash. everyjuan wants CASH! aircraft prices as well as boats and classic car prices have plummetted from their overinflated prices a few years back. barrett auction this year ought to be a feeding frenzy of the "cash rich" and the "poor over extended" owners of vehicles.

i can buy my dream boat of my LIFE, a 2007 382 formula fastech w/54 hours and TWIN merc 600 SCI motors and a/c/micro/icemaker/refrig for 189K right now today. it SOLD for over a 1/2 a MILL-YON BUCKS! 539K! in 2007.

there are ONLY (2) people i would /will ever fly with. the reason, i watch pilots behavior ALOT! these (2) pilots dont talk about it they do it. they walk the walk and dont talk. (1) is a retired 737 747 757 767 777 BOEING test pilot who flys his single and his twin planes(yep he owns (2)) damn near 2-3 times a week everyweek no matter the weather. the other got a gig shuttling around a wealthy family all over the u.s.. he flys damn near 5-6 times a week all over the u.s. his hours are thru the ROOF!

these "clowns" that have more money than brains and fly 2-3 times a year and "say their a pilot" make me want to puke! and those are the "pilots" ya read about in the obituary columns augering in.

When I entered the Navy over three decades ago, the T-28 (similar to the belly landed aircraft in Uno's picture [but with white and orange paint schemes]) was the primary trainer. I don't know how much avgas or bulk oil costs these days, but the 1425 hp R-1820 would go through about 6-9 gallons (yes, gallons) of oil and about 100 or so gallons of avgas for the normal 1.5 hr training flight. It was a pretty fun bird to fly, though, and has fair performance figures (350 kts and 4,000 fpm) at a pretty good price compared to WWII fighters...

all i'm saying is from a vantage point that i have, we have seen a hell of ALOT of people who THINK they are smarter than others go down this road and the ending is always the same. dead or broke. or both.

the bang for buck equation is sooooooooo skewed with any of these, you need to be the confederate air force to keep them safe.

so sure buy juan. and tear it down to the frame, and start replacing EVERYTHING! and i mean EVERYTHING!

its not like ya can just pull over to side of the road and fix them!

you would have a hell of alot better time with a porsche 917 and a hell of alot MORE STICK TIME!

Exactly the guy who I dread flying with. The guy who knows it all, has done it all, and will tell he has 1,000,000,000 hours. Those are the guys who you have to watch the most.

a polar 180 of your observation. spends more time than anyjuan i know doing maint on both planes he owns, then spends el supremo bucks with CERTIFIED A&P that we use, that i hired due to el supremo crap maint issues found by lil ol ME, from another "qualified ?" aircraft wrench on what i have to deal with.

this individuals planes are detailed/wrenched on/dialed in like NONE I HAVE EVER SEEN! total confidence that i would stake my life on. all the way down to his landing gear alignment being DEAD NUTS EL PERFECTO!

the most "lowkey" non braggard pilot i have ever met in my life. spends 7 days a week in both of his hangers if hes not flying making them el perfecto.
