Downhill racing is scary business, I raced in the downhill in Aspen and Vail to name a few. My last downhill was in Vail were I was coming into a big sweeper onto International run and both my tips blow off from the compression, somewhere in the 70 mph range, that was my last downhill. damn those 225cm K2 skis.

In the 90's I was a Technical Delegate for ski races, basically I ran a race and I did TD a speed race at Willamete Pass were the winner got over 100 mph, most impressive. I also witnessed a racer standing up too soon after he went thru the speed traps at that speed your body is like a sail. They flew him to the hospital in a helo.

Now you know the reason I have been driving Porsches since the late 60's, a total triple X double A. I attribute my skiing to driving, come into the turn hi above the gate and ride the rail. Skiing is a awesome sport, I still ski every week during the season, just not as long anymore, knees are kinda shot.

If anyone out there wants a pair of 225 cm Dynamic downhill skis, very fast skis, let me know, comes with no warranty, use at your own risk, they are beasts to turn under 50 mph but O' so sweet at speed.

The skis available? We can probably pick them up... My 15 yo wants to try them.

He's a first year J2 in his first year of FIS competition and skis out of Mission Ridge, he's currently on 204's for SuperG and did pretty well out at Schweitzer this last weekend in his first SuperG's of the season.

He's going to race downhill at the speed week at Bend next month and needs some REAL downhill skis!

He's got a great coach too... Greg Needell is the FIS coach, hopefully my son will get some time from him, he's pretty busy with the hotshots on the team. (Greg was on the US WC ski team staff from 2002 to 2009)

BTW the Mission Ridge team has got an event coming up sometime next month with the US ski team coming to do a demo on the mountain prior to going to Whistler.

cheers,
Eric

Dave.... I'm not so sure that your buddy Plake is really that good... Just fearlessly stupid....

slodave 01-06-2010 08:39 PM

I don't think he would disagree with you, but he is a good skier. Plake just never raced. :) Okay, he did a little racing, but mostly hung out with the right people and was noticed.

The intro to one of the films that introduced me to Plake.

porsche4life 01-06-2010 08:45 PM

Ya... He's good.... Still insane...

Plake is very good, I seem to remember him getting injured to end racing career. Pretty cool guy though, even with the silly mohawk. When I met him it was a different color, very different.

P.S. I forgot to mention that we were skiing Mammoth Mountain.

I think you need to change your screen name.

I think it should be... insanedave now... I have more than just the skiing to back up my logic....

While I'm thinking about it- screw speed skiing.... this is the real stuff right here:

The thing I always liked about Plake was that he loved to ski moguls. Many of the big "extreme skier/jumpers" couldnt bother with skiing bumps.

I think it was Coombs who talked shtt to Plake about him "wasting his time" skiing bumps. I think it made him one of the most complete high profile (and still alive) skiers out there
