In our case we had a gigantic wall with a fireplace so to fill the void we decided to make it a "featured wall" rather than a fireplace. I think it worked as we got tons of compliments and the house was actually photographed in a real estate/design magazine. The price was ridiculously small to extend from the base rock just above to the whole wall.. I guess the calculation was based on the trades being here already or something..

At night with the recesed lights from above showed the texture and it was really-really nice!!

Tell us more about that fire place, would ya. Gas?

Sorry for the delay. I had to get the info from a folder at my office. It is a direct vent gas fireplace.

Let the demolition begin. I've gotten so tired of this out of place design that I decided to go ahead with the demo to force me to do something more in keeping with the contemporary design of the house. It was just too ornate for my taste.

We have decided that the elevated hearth will be done in a single piece of rustic/natural stone with about a 1 1/2" lip. Undernaeth the jearth will be drywall to match the walls. The fascia is what's giving me pause...just don't know what to do just yet. We are lowering the mantle, making it more shallow and out of dark stained wood/rough cut cypress in a simple design. Probably a 52-60" flatscreen to be mounted above the fireplace.

Here we go...any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Can't you just turn that room into more garage space? We all need more garage space. :)

Channeling some pent up energy...during and after. Kept it simple and in concedrt with the angular lines of the architecture. Used 8 gauge steel as a surround and granite for the hearth but left the edges roughj tp add some texture. Went ahead and wired for power/coax/hdmi above the mantel but holding off on actually mounting tv up there as its become such a cliche. Pleased with my amateur efforts...

Thank you for understanding that.

The "art" work above your mantle turned out nice although it wouldn't be my choice. But, I don't know the house or the grand scheme.

Nice to see you back here.

why not just get a projector for the TV and throw it up on the balcony
