See Avatar, then off yourself?
Why do Cameron's movies have this effect?
After Titanic, remorseful young girls were contemplating killing themselves over the grave site of DiCaprio's character -- which wasn't even the same person; the departed simply had the same name. And his connection to the ship? He helped shove coal into the ship's furnaces. Now with Avatar, the lush Pandora world seems to be enough to cause a few disenchanted humans to live for nothing, despise humanity, and commit suicide to be "re-birthed" in the alien world the movie depicts. The power of cinema over the mind-weak masses. Hurray for Hollywood... |
In case anyone here is contemplating suicide in hopes they'll be rebirthed in Pandora, you need to realize there's no guarantee you wouldn't be rebirthed one theatre over... in Alvin & the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel.

Weeding out the genetic cesspool as far as I'm concerned.

It's just a f*****g movie!
It is not "based on a true story." |
+1. Anyone so pathetic as to believe this isn't someone whose genetic material I want in our gene pool anyway.
A little Cl in the gene pool is a good thing these days! Or a lot! |

Not true? Man...I guess it's back to fantasizing about green slave girls.

Movies and even books can lead people into suicide. One of the first was "The Sorrows of Young Werther" by Goethe which led to a wave of copycat suicide by young men all over Europe in the 1700s.
The Sorrows of Young Werther - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia I can see that someone who is depressed longs for a better and easier life like the Navi seem to have. The movie leaves a very strong impression - getting back into your daily reality after a trip to Pandora may just be enough to trigger someone's deeper issues. George |
This is why everybody should know someone like a football coach. Someone who will tell a person to cut the crap when they start acting like this over a movie.

If I was forced to sit through Avatar, I might contemplate suicide.
Of course, the only way to get me to watch it would be Clockwork Orange style. |

Saw both the Chipmunks movie and Avatar - while the Chipmunks were as expected, I did get a kick out of my 7yr old lil girl laughing. She didn't want to see Avatar but our 10yr old son and I saw it - it was good enough. Very very predictable. We both knew what was going to happen next. The visuals were good.
The only upsetting part for him was the cremation at the beginning. After seeing that he decided he was going to donate his body to science. I didn't have the heart to tell him what that meant (having preformed dissections on cadavers). |
